Leutkirch im Allgäu lies in a rolling Alpine foothills landscape among forests and ponds. Hiking, waterside nature and the history of glassmaking are among the different aspects of this destination. At 886 metres, Kapf is Leutkirch’s highest point and a prominent geographical landmark.

Natural Landscapes and Hiking Trails

Circular Hiking Trail 1 passes Repsweiher and then continues into the Unterer Stadtwald forest. It also runs along the railway line to Leutkirch and crosses the Eschach. At Siebenbrünnen, hikers can take a break and refresh themselves with cool spring water. Water availability may vary. Ponds, forests and waterways are among the varied landscapes featured along this route.

Circular Hiking Trail 2 leads from the old town towards the Waldkapelle chapel and reaches Weiherweg at the edge of town. On the return leg, it passes Repsweiher. A detour to Balterazhofer Höhe offers views of the Alpine panorama. The pond therefore features in both hiking trail descriptions, but at different points: on Circular Hiking Trail 1, before the route continues into the Unterer Stadtwald forest; and on Circular Hiking Trail 2, on the return leg. These differences may be just as important when choosing a route as the additional viewpoint at Balterazhofer Höhe.

Glassmaking History in Schmidsfelden

The Glasius Trail runs for just over four kilometres along the Eschach through the Adelegg; its starting point is in Schmidsfelden. Sixteen interactive learning and play stations invite children and adults to discover the history of glassmaking in the Adelegg. The route combines exercise with a clear cultural-historical theme and offers regular opportunities along the way to learn about regional glass production.

Schmidsfelden is a historic glassmaking village. There, glassmaker Stefan Michaelis gives glassblowing demonstrations. If you would like to plan a visit to a demonstration, check the latest dates in advance. The museum in the former glassmaking village also explores the area’s glassmaking history. The Schmidsfelden Glass Museum covers both the history of the “glass barons” and that of the ordinary workers. The trail, demonstrations and museum offer different perspectives: the Glasius Trail focuses on glassmaking in the Adelegg, while the museum explores the history of the people and groups behind glass production.

Swimming Lake, Adventure Trail and Music

Leutkirch’s Stadtweiher is an 18-hectare swimming lake. This figure gives a specific sense of the lake’s size; swimming conditions may vary. Another way to spend time outdoors is the family-friendly adventure trail. Three activity stations invite visitors to play, picnic and enjoy the views.

The “View of Gallus Chapel” station features a viewing frame aimed at the chapel, bicycle parking, a slackline, a lounging bench and a relaxation lounger. The facilities at individual stations may change. A live concert takes place every week in Leutkirch’s market square. If you are planning a specific visit, it is advisable to check the date in advance.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Ravensburg

Ravensburg offers another cultural and historical perspective: the Humpis-Quartier Museum opened in July 2009. Its permanent exhibition spans five buildings in a late-medieval residential quarter. Regular public tours and individually bookable tours are available for school classes, children and adults. If you are planning a visit, check the booking details. The museum focuses on the history of a late-medieval residential quarter, while Schmidsfelden’s glassmaking history offers a different cultural theme.
