Rieden am Forggensee: Lake and Roman Traces
Accommodation in Rieden am Forggensee
Rieden am Forggensee offers several starting points for planning a trip: swimming and recreation by the lake, Roman traces, churches, and viewpoints. If you are looking for a hotel in Rieden am Forggensee, you can consider whether you want to focus your outings on the water, the landscape, or culture.
Lake Forggensee and Roman Traces
Lake Forggensee offers opportunities for swimming and recreation by the water, with views of the Alps. The Via Claudia Augusta runs through the lake; when water levels are low, its remains become visible during the winter months. If you would like to see these traces in particular, the water level is an important factor when choosing your travel dates. Dietringen bathing area offers views of Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle.
Trips on the Forggensee municipal boat service are offered from June to mid-October. The views include a mountain panorama as well as Neuschwanstein Castle and the town of FĂĽssen. Check the timetable for your travel date before planning a trip. In Rieden am Forggensee, the Via Claudia Augusta is also listed as an archaeological monument from the Roman imperial period. The location of the Mansione Via Claudia Augusta rest area is connected with the Roman past: nearby, in Lake Forggensee, are the remains of the Roman imperial road and the find site of inscribed lead tablets, which the Romans used to identify valuable cargo.
Churches with Distinctive Building Histories
The parish church of the Five Holy Wounds dates back to a brotherhood chapel built in 1687. It has a high altar from the late 17th century and historic sacred carved figures. Its architectural history therefore combines features from different periods.
The listed cemetery church of St. Urban has a core that probably dates from the early 16th century. Johann Georg Fischer remodeled and expanded it in the Baroque style in 1734–35; it was consecrated in 1738. The two churches thus offer different historical points of reference: St. Urban is notable for its building phases and date of consecration, while the parish church is characterized, among other things, by its brotherhood chapel and high altar.
Faulensee, Viewpoint, and Accessibility
Faulensee is a small moor lake above Rieden am Forggensee, surrounded by forests and meadows. It has a non-swimmer area and an adventure playground with a waterwheel and stream. The lake can only be reached on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. Swimming conditions may vary by season and facilities may change, so check the local situation before your visit.
The Pilz viewpoint is about a 20-minute walk from the center of Rieden am Forggensee and offers views in three directions across the foothills of the Alps. From there, you can continue on foot to Faulensee. The two destinations offer different highlights: the viewpoint focuses on the landscape, while Faulensee also offers a moor lake, a swimming area, and a playground.
Rainis Faulenseehütte is about a ten-minute walk from the Höllmühle sawmill and can also be reached by bicycle. Its offerings include coffee and cake, ice cream specialties, a variety of snacks, and hot or cold dishes. As the menu may change, it is worth checking the current selection before your visit.
Ostallgäu in the Wider Region
In the wider travel destination of Ostallgäu, the mountains in the southwest of the district belong to the Vilser Gebirge range, while those in the southeast belong to the Ammergebirge range. At 2,082 meters, Hochplatte is the highest mountain in Ostallgäu. The cycling and hiking routes also offer a regional overview: the RadReiseRegion Ostallgäu includes themed regional routes that extend across the entire Ostallgäu, are each 25 to 76 kilometers long, and are signposted throughout. There are also 32 local hiking routes that showcase special natural and local attractions.
Neuschwanstein Castle is part of Ostallgäu’s wider cultural heritage and, since July 12, 2025, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Linderhof Palace, the King’s House on Schachen, and Herrenchiemsee Palace. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau royal castles can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
