The destination of Kronburg can be explored through three themes: the village center with the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Kronburg Castle and the routes through the Illerwinkel. Within the municipality, there are additional destinations in Illerbeuren and Kardorf. This distinction is helpful when choosing what to focus on: village and castle history, cycling or pilgrimage routes, or a nature theme.

Village Center and Castle

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity stands on a plateau below the castle hill and forms the village center of Kronburg. Its location places it right in the village landscape; Kronburg Castle adds its own historical character. If you want to get to know Kronburg through its village center, the church is a distinctive landmark.

Kronburg Castle is open for group tours from May to October. This seasonal schedule may change; check the current dates before your visit. Another recurring occasion is the romantic Christmas market, which the castle hosts every year in November. If the market is important to your travel plans, it is worth checking the specific event dates.

Illerbeuren: Museum, Cycle Path and Swimming

Illerbeuren is within the municipality of Kronburg, but not in the village of Kronburg itself. It is home to the Swabian Open-Air Museum Illerbeuren, Bavaria’s oldest open-air museum. It comprises more than 30 buildings. The Iller Cycle Path between Ulm and Oberstdorf passes through Illerbeuren. If you are planning to cycle this route, check the current route in advance.

The Iller bathing beach is also in Illerbeuren, where visitors can swim beneath the historic Iller Bridge. Check bathing conditions and safety on site. The museum, cycle path and bathing spot cater to different travel interests within the same municipality; the place name Illerbeuren helps distinguish them from destinations in the village of Kronburg.

Routes in the Illerwinkel

The Illerwinkel Way of St. James is a variant of the Western Route of the Way of St. James through the Unterallgäu. Coming from Memmingen, it leads from Kronburg through the Illerwinkel to Altusried. For a cycling trip, the “Illerwinkel Loop via Maria Steinbach and Kronburg” is another option: it passes through Kronburg and Zell and returns to Bad Grönenbach. The routes described therefore clearly differ: the pilgrimage route leads to Altusried, while the cycle tour returns to Bad Grönenbach.

Near Kardorf, in the municipality of Kronburg, the reservoir lies in front of the LEW hydroelectric power station on the Iller. It is a breeding and habitat area for many waterbirds. Thus, alongside its village and route-related attractions, the municipality also includes a distinct waterside habitat.

The Wider Unterallgäu

The broader destination of Unterallgäu provides a wider geographical context. The Iller forms the natural boundary of Unterallgäu in the west, and the Wertach in the east. Cycle and hiking trails throughout the district are signposted consistently; the region also has the Glückswege. Unterallgäu lies along the A7 and A96 motorways. An extensive road network, train connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg add to the region’s good accessibility.

The cultural attractions of Unterallgäu are also spread across different locations in the region. Notable architectural monuments include the Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim. The Fugger Castle in Kirchheim features the world-famous Cedar Hall; the former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. These destinations add further regional cultural themes to the picture of Kronburg, without being part of Kronburg’s own village center.

Dining in Kronburg

In the heart of Kronburg, the Zur Krone brewery inn serves its own specialty beers and fine food. If dining out is important to your plans, check the latest information before your visit, as details provided by operators can change. This means the local dining options can also be factored into your decision to visit Kronburg.
