Kißlegg – Baroque Culture, Obersee and Moorland Trails
Accommodation in Kißlegg
Kißlegg offers several highlights to consider when planning your trip: Baroque buildings and cultural attractions in town, activities at Obersee, and nature trails in the surrounding area. Which ones you combine also depends on the time of year, as water activities and the St. Anna leisure area are seasonal.
Castle, Church and Culture in Kißlegg
Kißlegg New Castle is in the heart of town, surrounded by an English-style castle park. The building was designed by master builder Johann Georg Fischer of Füssen and constructed between 1721 and 1727. The castle is also a venue for art and culture: regular exhibitions of contemporary art complement the local history museum. As individual exhibitions may change, we recommend checking the current program before your visit.
The magnificent Baroque church of St. Gallus and Ulrich, which houses the Augsburg silver treasure, is also in the town center. The Old Castle, on the edge of Lake Zellersee, adds a different architectural note: it is a Renaissance and Baroque building. These buildings offer different starting points for a cultural walk around Kißlegg, from the New Castle to the church and the Old Castle.
The app-based LAUSCHTOUR guides you through Kißlegg using GPS. This audio tour takes you through a Baroque gem at the western end of the main route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. It starts on the north side of the New Castle. Check in advance that the app and tour information are up to date for your visit.
Water at Obersee and Time Outdoors
The lido at Kißlegg’s Obersee offers pedal boats, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for short outings. Rentals are seasonal; if you’re planning one of these activities, confirm availability before your trip. The lido also has changing rooms, showers and toilets. The kiosk is open daily, though facilities may change with the seasons.
From April to October, the St. Anna family recreation area offers a large space with play equipment, an open playing field with goals and a water play area. This seasonal period can help you plan your visit; facilities and opening hours may change. Benches and tables are available for a picnic. You can rent a barbecue shelter with a barbecue area from the visitor and citizen information office. Check current rental conditions and seasonal hours before your visit.
Moorland Trails Nearby
In Burgermoos, close to Kißlegg, a 3.9-kilometer circular trail runs through the moor on wooden boardwalks. The nature trail features interactive stations and activity areas. Its set circular route and boardwalks make this outing different from a visit to the town center. You can book a guided nature tour of Burgermoos through the visitor and citizen information office; check the booking arrangements before your trip.
Arrisrieder Moos is a few kilometers south of Kißlegg and has its own nature trail. The moor can be visited year-round with suitable footwear; it is especially appealing during the heather bloom in August. When choosing between the nearby nature areas, you can therefore consider their specific differences: Burgermoos offers a 3.9-kilometer circular trail over wooden boardwalks, while the heather bloom is a seasonal highlight at Arrisrieder Moos.
Guided Tours and Event Dates
Group tours in Kißlegg can be booked through the visitor and citizen information office at any time, regardless of the season or opening hours. If you’d like to include a tour in your stay, confirm the booking details before your trip. The Christmas market in and around the New Castle takes place every year on the first weekend of Advent. As exact dates may vary from year to year, check the date when planning your trip.
Another Cultural Highlight in the Wider Ravensburg Destination
In the wider Ravensburg destination, the Humpis-Quartier Museum offers a distinctive look at late medieval domestic life. The museum opened in July 2009; its permanent exhibition spans five buildings in a late medieval residential quarter. Regular public tours and individually bookable tours are available for school classes, children and adults. Alongside Kißlegg’s Baroque architecture, this offers the option of a historical museum visit in Ravensburg with a different focus. Tour booking details may change.
