Waldburg: Castle Culture, Planet Trail and Fruit Tree Trail
Accommodation in Waldburg
Waldburg can be explored through several distinct themes: trails dedicated to planets and fruit trees, Waldburg Castle, which combines the castle complex with a special map and a puzzle activity, and the ADRIAN gourmet manufactory, which processes fruit from Upper Swabian traditional orchards. If you are looking for a hotel in Waldburg, you can plan your stay around these interests: castle culture, a themed trail, or regional products each offer a different focus.
Trails with Different Themes
The Planet Trail begins at the town hall in the center of town and runs along Hauptstraße and Amtzeller Straße, past the schoolyard, to the observatory. Information boards provide details about the respective planets. The town hall, both streets, the schoolyard, and the observatory form a sequence of clearly named stops, while the planet boards provide the central theme. The trail thus leads from a specific starting point in the town center to an equally specific destination.
The Waldburg Fruit Tree Trail has a different focus. It stretches from Hof Sutter, north of Waldburg, to Schädlers Kreuz and features 40 different fruit trees, each with an information board in front of it. The trees and the information about each one are the main focus. This gives you a clear choice of interests: planets and planet boards on the one hand, different fruit trees with information boards on the other.
Waldburg Castle: Map, Puzzles, and a Medieval Feast
Waldburg is considered one of the best-preserved castle complexes in southern Germany. At Waldburg Castle, the Waldseemüller map is presented as the “birth certificate of America” and as a Memory of the World document. The castle rally offers a different way to explore: visitors aged 12 to 99 solve puzzles inside the castle. The map is an exhibition topic, while the rally focuses on the puzzle challenges.
Medieval feasts are offered in the deep vaulted cellar for occasions such as birthdays, company outings, and corporate celebrations. An authentic medieval meal is the main attraction. Booking is required; availability may vary.
Regional Products and Tastings
Today, the ADRIAN gourmet manufactory uses apples and pears from Upper Swabian traditional orchards to make fine vinegar specialties, fruit juices, and sparkling wines. You can sample a range of ADRIAN products in the vaulted cellar. This adds a culinary focus to the castle and trail themes: regional fruits are processed here into a variety of products. The product range may change over time. If you plan to attend a tasting, check the details with the operator before your visit.
Field Chapels in the Wider Area
Four small field chapels are also clustered in the wider area around Waldburg. Three older ones are locally known as Hustenkäppele, Grimmenkäppele, and Oißenkäppele. They complement the castle with smaller examples of regional cultural history located around the destination.
