Aichach combines a medieval town center with sites linked to Wittelsbach history and routes along the Paar and through the Grubet. When planning your stay, you can focus on the old town, historical sites, or routes on foot and by bike. The sights differ not only in their themes, but also in how you experience Aichach’s history and landscape.

City History in the Town Center

Guided city tours lead through the medieval town center, past squares and narrow lanes. They introduce the history of Aichach’s town square, with its stately town houses and two imposing town gates. The historic old town has changed little over the centuries. If you would like to learn more about the city, the Aichach City Museum explores the history and culture of Aichach and its surrounding area across approximately 1,000 square meters.

The Wittelsbach Museum, housed in the Lower Gate in Aichach, offers another look into the past. Numerous interactive stations introduce archaeological methods and the history of the Aichach area. For specific visitor information, check the museum’s latest details in advance. Audio experiences complement the tour: for “Aichach am Ohr” (“Aichach at Your Ear”), Aichach residents have created contributions about special places in and around Aichach. The project is a joint effort by the City Museum and vhs Aichach-Friedberg e. V.

The zeigmal.App for Aichach also combines history with its own audio and visual content: it offers free audio guides for 21 sites, historical images and augmented reality features; no registration is required. App features may change. If you are planning to use these offerings during your visit, check their availability in advance.

Wittelsbach Sites and Routes

The Sisi Castle is in Unterwittelsbach, a district of Aichach. It served as a hunting lodge for Duke Max in Bavaria and is a stop on the “Sisi Road,” a European cultural route following the places where Empress Elisabeth lived. Oberwittelsbach takes you to another chapter in Wittelsbach history: their ancestral castle stood here. Today, the castle grounds are still home to the castle church, isolated remnants of walls and the national monument dating from 1834.

You can also combine visits to these historical sites with a hike. A hiking trail leads from the moated castle in Unterwittelsbach through fields and woodland to the site of the former ancestral castle in Oberwittelsbach. The trail between Unterwittelsbach and Oberwittelsbach is signposted as the “History Trail.” Six stops explore the Wittelsbachs’ connection to both places. The route highlights not only its destinations but also the historical links between Unterwittelsbach and Oberwittelsbach.

Routes Along the Paar and Through the Grubet

The green corridor along the Paar offers walkers and cyclists a riverside route through Aichach’s town center, away from heavily trafficked roads. It is also an important section of the continuous Paartal cycle route. In the wider Aichach-Friedberg travel region, the Paartal hiking trail also follows the middle reaches of the Paar from Aichach to Gut Schenkenau in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district. Its total length is 36.8 kilometers. Cyclists can choose from 14 well-signposted themed routes shown on the Aichach-Friedberg district cycling map; check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Aichach forest adventure trail in the Grubet reveals a different landscape. About two kilometers long, it runs through an area shaped by prehistoric iron ore mining and invites visitors to experience nature with all their senses. To the west of Aichach, in the wider region, around 3,500 pits are scattered across several former mining fields. These funnel-shaped depressions are up to three meters deep. The pits give the landscape another historical dimension, while the forest adventure trail brings together an experience of nature and the history of the Grubet.
