Meßstetten combines trails through species-rich natural landscapes with viewpoints along the steep Albtrauf escarpment and attractions centred on water, art and local history. There is something for different interests, from signposted hikes and short circular walks to museums and a seasonal bathing facility.

Hiking Trails and Views

Meßstetten has marked, well-signposted hiking trails through species-rich natural landscapes, with viewpoints along the steep Albtrauf escarpment. The free Meßstetten hiking and leisure map includes the premium HochAlbPfade trails, shorter circular walks and trip suggestions. This lets you choose between different types of trails and plan according to the tour you have in mind.

The season also shapes the landscape: the HochAlb is home to colourful flower meadows with remarkable biodiversity, especially in early summer. In Tieringen, Nordic walking routes run through the species-rich Hülenbuch nature reserve and along the Tieringer Hörnle, where viewpoints are part of the route.

The Sculpture Panorama Trail is a circular route about 1,000 metres long, featuring eleven sculptures by local artists. It is particularly suitable for people who use walking aids, wheelchair users with a companion, users of electric wheelchairs and families with pushchairs. Redesign work may change the route; changes to the trail surface may affect accessibility. Before your visit, check the current route and conditions.

Reservoir and Short Walks

In the Meßstetten district of Oberdigisheim, the Oberdigisheim reservoir offers swimming in summer. There is also a circular walk along the shore, a children’s playground and two barbecue areas. Swimming is seasonal; check bathing conditions and the state of the facilities before your trip.

In Tieringen, the approximately 850-metre-long barefoot trail passes over sand, clay, mud, pebbles, bark mulch, forest floor and meadow. The changing surfaces give this trail its own focus and set it apart from the signposted hiking and Nordic walking routes.

Museums and Local History

In the Hossingen district, the local history museum stands beside the Protestant church. Hossingen is also home to the Hossinger Leiter, a historic route that recalls former work routes to Lautlingen and Ebingen. The two sites therefore offer different ways to explore history: a local history museum and a trail linked to the working life of the past.

The Meßstetten Museum of Folk Art displays more than 1,300 objects across four floors. The collection consists mainly of items from the German-speaking region of southern Germany dating from the 17th to the 19th century. One notable part of the collection is twelve of the 42 rare pairs of figures from Anton Sohn’s Basel Dance of Death. Meßstetten also received its own St. Lamprecht Church in the 12th or 13th century.

Hiking in the Zollernalb District

In the wider Zollernalb district destination, the Schlichem hiking trail starts in Meßstetten-Tieringen and runs for 33 kilometres to Epfendorf. Along the way, the route offers small waterfalls, wet meadows and a steep-sided gorge. By comparison, the Sculpture Panorama Trail, at approximately 1,000 metres long, is a much shorter circuit. The different trail lengths help put these two hiking options in perspective.
