Wehingen lies on the Großer Heuberg, in valleys carved by the Bära and Mühlbach streams. The highest elevations of the Swabian Alb surround the town; the area is known as the region of the 10 Thousanders. For planning your trip, its religious buildings and countryside trails offer two distinct areas of interest.

Chapels and Churches with a History of Their Own

Bürgle Chapel is regarded as a landmark of Wehingen and stands on a hill. Footpaths lead up to it from various directions; check trail conditions before your visit. The chapel is often visited by pilgrims and worshippers and offers a peaceful place to pray. A Way of the Cross with 14 stations leads to the chapel and is traditionally walked every Good Friday. Below the chapel is a Lourdes grotto, built in 1890. Devotions are held there in May, the month of Mary. If you are planning a visit on Good Friday or in May, check the current arrangements, as devotional activities may vary.

At the edge of town on the road toward Harras, Fronhofer Church stands in the cemetery. It was first mentioned in documents in 1245 as the Church of the Holy Trinity and served for a long time as the parish and mother church for surrounding communities on the Heuberg. It is regarded as a historic monument and an art-historical testament to earlier eras.

St. Ulrich Parish Church is in the town center and serves as the spiritual center of the Catholic parish. It can accommodate around 500 visitors and was first mentioned in documents in 1299. Its 35-meter-high tower is one of the tallest structures in Wehingen. Together, the churches reflect different roles: Fronhofer Church represents its former importance as a mother church, while St. Ulrich is the spiritual center of the Catholic parish. The documentary mentions cited above provide historical reference points in 1245 and 1299.

Leisure in Town and Trails in the Surrounding Area

Wehingen has a total of seven public playgrounds for children and young people. The Sauerwasen leisure area includes a pump track, a small sports field and a skate park. If you are planning activities for children and young people, Sauerwasen offers three clearly defined activities in one area; the seven playgrounds are the total number for the town.

The Hochberg circular trail near Wehingen is about 5.4 kilometers long and starts and ends at the Bürgle parking lot. The route passes, among other places, Hintere Uchten, Holzeck, Blaidhalde, Rossreute, Weilerhang, Hochberghütte, Schänzle and Hochberg Ost. Its length, start and end points, and named waypoints give you concrete details for planning the loop. Check trail conditions before setting off.

The regionally signposted Route of the 10 Thousanders offers a different perspective on the area. It runs through the surroundings of Wehingen, Deilingen, Gosheim and Denkingen and connects ten mountains in the Swabian Alb that are over 1,000 meters high: Lemberg, Hochberg, Oberhohenberg, Wandbühl, Montschenloch, Bol, Rainen, Hummelsberg, Hochwald and Kehlen. The route is considered a nature experience for hikers. While the Hochberg circular trail is described with an approximate length and named start and end points, the Route of the 10 Thousanders connects several peaks across a wider area. Check local signposting and route conditions before your hike.

For cycling trips, the Wehingen cycling information service offers an interactive Donaubikeland map to help you explore Wehingen and its surroundings. It also refers to 16 cycling tours in the Donaubergland. The map and tour information provide different kinds of guidance: the map focuses on Wehingen and its surroundings, while the reference points to the regional cycling tour offering.
