Accommodation in Denkingen
For planning a trip to Denkingen, Klippeneck, the hiking trails that run through the area and local places of remembrance offer concrete points of reference. You can consider these topics as distinct focal points: landscape, routes and local history. This makes it easier to work out what particularly interests you about this destination.
Klippeneck and the Albtrauf
The Klippeneck plateau lies on the Albtrauf between Tuttlingen and Rottweil, within the municipality of Denkingen. To the west, it drops steeply into the valley. The plateau and its western slope give the landscape a striking shape. In 2010, with financial support, the municipality of Denkingen erected a panoramic information board on the plateau. It is near the hiking car park and at the starting point of many hiking trails. This brings together a description of the terrain and directions to the trails that begin at Klippeneck.
The GEO monument is also located on the escarpment near the Klippeneck hiking car park. The municipality of Denkingen erected it in 2018 to mark the municipality’s 1,200th anniversary. Another local point of reference is the Albverein fountain on the road through the village. It was installed in 1996 with support from the municipality and SchwerPräzision. The dates distinguish when these places and features were created: the fountain is on the road through the village, while the panoramic information board and GEO monument are on the Klippeneck plateau.
Kreuzsteige and local features
On the heights of Klippeneck in Denkingen, the Kreuzsteige rest and barbecue area is located on the main hiking trails HW 1 and HW 3. The area was originally established by the municipality of Denkingen. In 2017, the Denkingen Albverein built the “Kreuzsteighütte” shelter there. This distinguishes two stages in the development of the site: the municipality’s original creation of the area and the Albverein’s later construction of the shelter. The name Kreuzsteige therefore refers to a specific place associated with the main hiking trails, while the Kreuzsteighütte is a separate, named addition.
Another feature added by the Denkingen Albverein in 2019 was a wave-shaped reclining bench on the escarpment, offering impressive views. The area, shelter and reclining bench are distinct local points of reference; their names help you tell them apart when planning your trip. Together with the panoramic information board and the GEO monument, they give a picture of the different places at Klippeneck, although they do not all serve the same purpose.
Hiking trails at Klippeneck
Several named trails pass Klippeneck: the Donauberglandweg, the Albsteig Schwäbische Alb, the Donauwellen-Premiumweg Klippeneck-Steig and other local circular hiking trails maintained by the municipality of Denkingen. A more specifically described route connection concerns HW 3: in Denkingen, it follows the same route as HW 1 across Klippeneck and continues towards Dreifaltigkeitsberg. At the Kreuzsteige rest and barbecue area, the information about HW 1 and HW 3 comes together with the location of the area. When planning your hikes, both the trail names and their respective routes are therefore relevant. Check the latest route information before setting out.
The wider destination of Tuttlingen
The wider destination of Tuttlingen opens up a broader landscape: the district of Tuttlingen covers 734.4 square kilometres and encompasses the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Jura, parts of the Baar region and the valley of the Young Danube. White limestone cliffs rise above the Danube Valley. The Danube Sinkhole between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen is also part of this regional theme. It can look different from day to day: at times, the Danube carries a lot of water there; in some places it is completely dry, while elsewhere it carries only a little water. Its appearance therefore depends on the prevailing water conditions.
The Neuhausen ob Eck Open-Air Museum offers another perspective within the wider destination of Tuttlingen. It features 25 historic buildings that were dismantled at their original locations, moved there and restored to their original condition. While Klippeneck and the Albtrauf form the local section’s landscape themes, the focus here is on historic buildings that have been relocated. When choosing a destination, you can thus distinguish the local focus on Denkingen from other landscape and cultural themes in the wider destination of Tuttlingen.
