Edingen-Neckarhausen combines the history of its palace with waterside paths and a landscape in the Rhine floodplains. The main areas of interest for planning your trip are easy to distinguish: the palace park in the old center of Neckarhausen, the Fish Nursery between the two districts, and the banks of the Neckar and the Edingen Ried.

Palace Park: History and Greenery

Neckarhausen Palace originated as a Thurn-und-Taxis post station, which had been operating in Neckarhausen since at least 1634. The approximately three-hectare palace park is in the old center. A rich variety of trees, meadow valleys, and sightlines characterize the grounds, which invite visitors to linger and stroll.

The ice cellar illustrates an earlier use of the Neckar: in winter, blocks of ice sawn from the frozen river were stored there for cooling. Today, the Neckar and its floodplain are also used for paddling, fishing, and recreation. The orangery was fully restored in 2008 and is available for cultural events. For many years, the palace park has also been home to hundreds of rose-ringed parakeets.

Fish Nursery and the Banks of the Neckar

The approximately 13,000-square-meter Fish Nursery between Edingen and Neckarhausen is a side channel of the Neckar and serves as a breeding and refuge habitat for fish. At the same time, it gives the public attractive access to the water. A riverside path and viewing platforms make it possible to observe nature. There is also an outdoor classroom by the river, with a sun sail and tiered seating, for schools and youth fishing groups.

In Edingen-Neckarhausen, extensive walking paths run along the banks of the Neckar. The Edingen Ried presents a different landscape: in the Rhine floodplains, the scenery is shaped by wetlands, deciduous forest, ponds, small lakes, and an old arm of the Rhine. While the walking paths along the Neckar follow the river, broad paths in the Ried run over the Rhine embankments.

Leisure Pool and Connections to Ladenburg

The Edingen-Neckarhausen leisure pool has a 25-meter pool with a diving tower, a whirlpool with an exercise pool, and an outdoor pool with reclining bays. There is also a toddlers’ pool, a sunbathing lawn with views of the Neckar, a massage practice, and a sauna. As operating details can change, it is worth checking the leisure pool’s latest information before your visit.

The Neckarhausen ferry connects Edingen-Neckarhausen with Ladenburg across the Neckar; service may be interrupted in bad weather or during high water. A railway bridge also connects the towns and can be used by cyclists and pedestrians. Check the current ferry status before planning a crossing.

Ladenburg in the Rhine-Neckar District

Within the broader destination of the Rhine-Neckar District, Ladenburg has its own historical focus: much of the townscape in the historic center still reflects the Middle Ages and, in part, the Roman period. The Electoral Palatinate’s Schwetzingen Palace, with its Rococo theater and park, is also part of the Rhine-Neckar District’s cultural profile.
