Schechingen: Chapel Trail, Church and Easter Fountain
Accommodation in Schechingen
When looking for a hotel in Schechingen, the local circular trails and cultural attractions can be a helpful guide. Highlights include the Chapel Trail, St. Sebastian’s Church with its Ölberg Chapel, and the village fountain decorated each year. These offer different ways to plan your trip: a circular trail with several chapels, a shorter reflective walk, and local history brought to life through specific buildings and depictions.
Circular Trails with Different Highlights
The Chapel Trail is a 9 km circular route. It starts in the village center at the Catholic Church of St. Sebastian, passes five chapels, and ends back at the church by the Ölberg Chapel in the church square. Both the starting point and finish are therefore in the town center, with the five chapels defining the route’s theme. If you want to compare routes by length, the 9 km distance gives you a specific figure to plan around.
The approximately 4 km reflective walk starts near the Klotzhöfe farms in the Schechingen municipal district. It was created in 2004 by a private project group from Schechingen. Much of the route is wheelchair accessible and has no significant inclines. Check the current condition of the surface and access before your visit. At around 4 km, the reflective walk is shorter than the Chapel Trail; the two routes also differ in their respective focus and the landmarks mentioned.
The Church and Ölberg Chapel
St. Sebastian’s Church in Schechingen was built as St. Nicholas Church before 1250. The Ölberg Chapel stands in the churchyard of the church in the town center. Its Baroque figures depict Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper while the disciples sleep.
This place brings together two distinct aspects of local history: the church’s early construction history and a specific biblical scene depicted in Baroque form. Visitors interested in both can experience the church and Ölberg Chapel as connected stops, without conflating the two historical themes.
The Schechingen Easter Fountain
The village fountain stands in the marketplace in front of the historic town hall and is decorated each year with real, hand-painted eggs. One documented edition featured 13,397 eggs. The 25th edition of the Easter Fountain is scheduled to run from March 20 to April 11, 2027. If you would like to plan your trip around this period, check the event dates in advance. The fountain complements the church and trail themes with a recurring event in village life.
The Wider Travel Destination of the Ostalbkreis
Beyond Schechingen, the Ostalbkreis offers its own cultural and hiking attractions.
As a separate tour in the Ostalbkreis, the Limes Circular Hiking Trail near Rainau runs from the Limes Wall and Limes Tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through the Mahdholz forest along the Limes to the southern edge of Schwabsberg. The route is about 11 km long and takes approximately 2.5 hours on foot. This provides a specific route length and approximate walking time for regional planning, while the Schechingen routes are defined by their own landmarks and themes.
