Art centred on Sieger Köder

The gallery and the “Altes Rathaus” museum in Rosenberg display works by painters Sieger Köder and Karl Stirner, both closely associated with Rosenberg. The Sieger Köder Centre in Rosenberg displays drawings, original stained-glass windows, sculptures and three-dimensional works, as well as pictures, photos and videos of Sieger Köder. The focus is therefore both on two artists associated with Rosenberg and on a wide range of Köder’s work.

The Bible Garden is located beside the Sieger Köder Centre. It contains eight illustrated panels and more than 60 plant species. The plants are arranged in the order in which they appear in the Bible. The panels and the sequence of plants both address biblical themes, but in different ways: the images provide one point of access, while the selection and arrangement of plants provide another. Together, the art centre and garden offer two distinct cultural themes in Rosenberg.

Distinguishing routes by duration and course

The municipality’s 2021 leisure guide gives an approximate journey time of three and a half hours for the “Around Rosenberg” cycling tour. The time is explicitly approximate; check the current route and local conditions when planning. Another circular route listed in the guide starts in the centre of the village, passes Holzmühlenweiher, the Orrotsee car park and Herlingsweiher, then returns to Rosenberg.

The leisure guide also lists the Franconian–Swabian Way of St James / HW4 on the stretch from Mainkling to Adelmannsfelden via Rosenberg and Hohenberg. The three descriptions answer different planning questions: an approximate journey time is given for the cycling tour, the stops and return point are listed for the circular route, and the Way of St James is described as part of a longer route.

Beyond Rosenberg, the Ostalbkreis offers further options for those interested in culture and history. The Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Within the municipality of Rainau, it runs through the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen for about six kilometres. The most beautiful sections and most important individual monuments of the Limes are preserved in a unique concentration in Limes Park Rainau. A reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views across the Ostalb; the Limes Gate at Dalkingen is a unique structure along the entire Limes between the Rhine and the Danube.

Lorch Monastery is another cultural and historical highlight. It was founded in 1102 by the first Hohenstaufen ruler, Frederick I, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen as a burial place. The complex includes a medieval church, cloister and service buildings. Marsilius Tower offers views of the monastery complex, herb garden, sensory garden and surrounding area. The permanent exhibition presents 900 years of monastic history, including through the richly decorated Lorch choir books. Architecture, gardens and the monastery’s place in history can thus be explored side by side.

The Tiefer Stollen visitor mine offers yet another perspective: on a visit, the mine train travels past mineral deposits and small stalactites into sandstone halls covering 2,500 m², 100 metres underground. There, a multimedia show introduces the history of iron ore mining in the Aalen area. A circular route through the labyrinth of tunnels leads to former underground mining areas with shafts, loading points and ore extraction chambers. Alongside art and history, the Ostalbkreis therefore also offers insights into the region’s former iron ore mining.
