Discover Hohberg
Accommodation in Hohberg
Hohberg is located on the B3 between Offenburg and Lahr, near Strasbourg. Among the things that make the town an interesting place to stay are the Hohberg Bee Museum, winegrowing and several trails. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in the history of beekeeping, the landscape or wine.
Beekeeping and the history of winegrowing
The Hohberg Bee Museum presents Baden beekeeping, past and present, through around 600 exhibits. Beekeeping in Hohberg is considered a tradition dating back more than 600 years. Informative, educational guided tours are particularly suitable for school groups. The museum thus combines exhibits with a guided educational program.
Another cultural attraction is the museum at the Roeder von Diersburg winery. It presents the history of winegrowing and that of the majorat estate. Wine tastings are available by prior arrangement. So if you plan to include a tasting, arrange your visit in advance.
Trails through nature and the local districts
The marked “From Steeple to Steeple” circular trail connects Hohberg’s three districts and is around 12 kilometers long. It passes through natural areas, vineyards and village scenery. Its character is shaped not only by its length: the changing landscapes and village views also make this circular route distinctive.
The Wunderfitz Trail in Diersburg offers a shorter route: this discovery trail for families with children is approximately 4 kilometers long. Compared with the circular trail, at around 12 kilometers, it is considerably shorter and focuses on discovery. The tree and hedgerow nature trail adds a variety of native plants to these routes.
Vineyards and regional grape varieties
Hohberg’s vineyards lie on loess soils and include steep, south-facing slopes. Varieties grown here include Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and grapes from the Pinot family. These details give a concrete sense of winegrowing as part of the town’s character. Together with the museum at the Roeder von Diersburg winery, they let you explore both the landscape and the history of winegrowing; wine tastings must be arranged in advance.
More to discover in the Ortenau district
The Ortenau district lies between the Rhine and the Black Forest. The district has 23 nature reserves covering a total area of around 3,110 hectares; they extend from the Rhine plain to the higher elevations of the Black Forest. The Taubergießen nature reserve covers 1,695 hectares and is one of the largest nature reserves in Baden-Württemberg. These figures illustrate the diversity of the regional landscape across the district.
Cultural attractions and family activities in the Ortenau district each offer something different. Rulantica in Rust offers year-round water fun for the whole family, with indoor and outdoor water attractions. The facilities also include Hyggedal, a relaxation and sauna area. Europa-Park is also located in the municipality of Rust.
At MiMa, the focus is on minerals from the Black Forest collected by the Friends of Minerals and Mining Oberwolfach Association (Verein der Freunde von Mineralien und Bergbau Oberwolfach e. V.). A tour of the historic farmhouses at the Vogtsbauernhof Open-Air Museum shows how people lived and worked in the Black Forest up to 600 years ago. In Gengenbach, the night watchman’s tour includes twelve stops and the traditional night watchman’s song. The public tours are free, and no registration is required. Check the current dates before your trip.
