Biberach – Hiking, Culture and History
Accommodation in Biberach
Biberach brings together hiking trails, local history and regional culture. The municipality also includes the district of Prinzbach, where you can discover traces of the past and places of interest in their own right. When planning your trip, consider whether outdoor activities or culture and history should play a greater part in your visit.
Hiking and getting around
Biberach and its district of Prinzbach have numerous well-marked hiking trails for both active and leisurely walks. Two historical circular routes run through Biberach and Prinzbach. This gives you a choice of trails with different levels of difficulty as well as circular routes with a historical connection. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Biberach railway station offers good train connections. If you plan to arrive by train, check the current timetables before your trip.
Garden, swimming and outdoor activities
The heated Waldterrassenbad is outside the village, in a quiet location near the edge of the forest, and offers views of Biberach. In the station park, the bocce court is next to the minigolf course; it is open to everyone free of charge. We recommend checking the local conditions in advance.
Alpaca trekking tours are available at Bechererhof by prior arrangement. Contact the operator directly to confirm availability and make arrangements before your visit.
The herb garden of the Prinzbach-Schönberg Rural Women's Association is located right by the historic town wall in Biberach-Prinzbach and has more than 100 plants. Its position alongside the wall connects the garden with a prominent historic site in the district.
Prinzbach’s history and the Kettererhaus
The Kettererhaus is considered one of Biberach’s oldest buildings. It is named after its last private owner, the “Kettererschmied” (Ketterer blacksmith). The Kettererhaus local history museum displays local cultural artifacts relating to rural work and life, customs and associations, as well as historic toys. Together, the building and collection offer insight into architectural history and local everyday culture.
Behind the town hall in Prinzbach is an excavated section of the town wall, a testament to Prinzbach’s past as a silver-mining town. The former town hall houses the town archive, with finds and objects from the history of the former mining town. Visits are possible by request; please arrange your visit in advance.
For a history-focused stay, the Kettererhaus, town wall and town archive offer different points of interest. If you would rather spend time outdoors, hiking trails, the herb garden and other outdoor activities are also available.
The Ortenau district as a broader regional setting
The Ortenau district lies between the Rhine and the Black Forest. Its 23 nature reserves cover a total of around 3,110 hectares, stretching from the Rhine plain to the higher elevations of the Black Forest. This regional context broadens the view beyond Biberach and Prinzbach without conflating the Ortenau district’s destinations with what the town itself has to offer.
Distinct destinations within the broader Ortenau district travel region include Europa-Park in the municipality of Rust and Rulantica. Rulantica offers water-based fun for the whole family all year round, with indoor and outdoor water attractions as well as the Hyggedal relaxation and sauna area. At the Vogtsbauernhof Open-Air Museum, a tour of historic farmhouses shows how people in the Black Forest lived and worked up to 600 years ago.
