Assamstadt: Nature Trail, Landscape and Cultural History
Accommodation in Assamstadt
The Assamstadt Nature Educational Trail is 2.2 kilometres long and leads through the forest or along the edge of the forest. The route runs predominantly on paved paths and has only slight inclines.
Nature and Trails
The circular trail begins at the sports fields; those arriving by car can park there. Eight interactive stations focus on the inhabitants of the forest and add vivid points of discovery to the trail. From the nature trail, the view extends across the town and over the Dachttal valley covered with fruit trees. On the short circuit, forest, information stations and views across the landscape come together.
The Wayside Shrine Trail 1 / LT-M6 offers a longer hike. The route is approximately 11 kilometres long and received the Wanderbares Deutschland quality seal in 2019. It includes the Steffeskirchle, the Mariengrotte and the Schlackohrenpilz viewpoint. The Steffeskirchle is a group of crucifixion figures from the mid-20th century and can be reached via a Stations of the Cross trail. When choosing a route, a compact nature trail and a considerably longer hike with religious and landscape destinations are therefore available side by side.
Culture and History
The Old St. Kilian's Church is part of Assamstadt's cultural history. The lower part of its tower is dated to the 12th century. From 1991 to 1994, the church was converted into the St. Kilian Community Centre. Historical elements were preserved during this conversion, including stained-glass windows, foundation stones and a sacrament niche in the tower chapel.
More than 50 Christian devotional monuments can be found throughout the municipality of Assamstadt. They are therefore not located at a single point, but accompany the perception of the town and landscape in many places.
Another historical site is the cemetery chapel. It was built in 1837 and thoroughly renovated in 1909. Alongside the medieval-dated lower section of the tower of the Old St. Kilian's Church and its later conversion, it points to another chapter in the local architectural history.
Landscape
Assamstadt is considered scenically beautiful. The town is also regarded as worth visiting beyond a virtual tour. The view of the Dachttal valley covered with fruit trees and the paths through the forest and along its edge give this description concrete images.
Those wishing to combine nature trails and sacred landmarks will find different ways to explore Assamstadt: a short circuit with interactive stations, a longer hike with several named destinations, as well as historic buildings and devotional monuments.
