Nussdorf offers a clear cultural focus for a stay: the Heiligkreuzkirche combines late Gothic architectural history with wall and ceiling paintings, while Nussdorf Castle adds several historical architectural styles to the picture. KUNSTWERK Sammlung Klein adds exhibitions and a sculpture outside the museum. Nature and signposted circular routes are also among the topics you can consider when planning your trip.

Heiligkreuzkirche and the History of the Castle

The Heiligkreuzkirche is now the parish church of the Holy Cross and was formerly a cemetery church. Master Peter of Koblenz built the late Gothic structure in 1482. The church contains tombs of the von Reischach family, as well as extensive wall and ceiling paintings depicting the Passion of Christ and the Last Judgment. Another chapter in its history is the fire of 1945: the choir and its vault paintings remained undamaged; the church was restored around 1950. Its construction date, painted subjects and restoration thus represent different aspects of its architectural history.

Nussdorf Castle also reveals several layers of history. It stands on medieval foundations and features German Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architectural forms. The castle of the Barons of Reischach was originally built in the 15th century and extensively remodeled in 1879. The complex includes a castle park with rubble-stone perimeter walls and a gate marked with the date 1879. The church and castle thus offer two different ways to explore Nussdorf’s history: sacred architecture and painting on the one hand, and castle architecture and a park ensemble on the other.

Art at KUNSTWERK and on the ART LOOP

KUNSTWERK Sammlung Klein presents exhibitions twice a year, drawing on a collection of nearly 2,000 works. The sculpture “The Fast and the Furious” by Stefan Rohrer stands directly in front of the museum. The sculpture’s location and KUNSTWERK’s exhibitions offer two different points of interest for art lovers. KUNSTWERK is also part of the ART LOOP sculpture cycle route.

In the wider travel destination of Eberdingen, the 35-kilometer ART LOOP art cycling route runs from Schwieberdingen station through Hemmingen to Eberdingen’s districts of Nussdorf and Hochdorf, and back. Alongside the walking routes, this provides a longer cycling route and an art-related route to explore. Check the current route and trail conditions before setting out.

Nature and Circular Routes

Lichthölzle near Nussdorf is of statewide importance in the General Wildlife Corridors Plan. It is home to unusually large populations of mound-building wood ants; their nests are strictly protected. This nature focus differs from the historic buildings and art offerings: here, the emphasis is on an area included in the wildlife corridors plan and the protection of ant nests.

The “Zu Fuß die Heimat entdecken” brochure provides guidance on hiking trails around Nussdorf. Nussdorf Town Hall and Nussdorf sports field are designated starting points for circular routes. This allows you to distinguish between local circular routes and the longer-distance ART LOOP: the former are described as hiking trails, while the 35-kilometer ART LOOP is a cycling route through several districts of Eberdingen. Routes and conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Which themes suit your stay?

If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Nussdorf, the focus of your stay can provide a starting point. For architectural and church history, visit the Heiligkreuzkirche and Nussdorf Castle, each with its own historical features. Art lovers will find several different points of interest in KUNSTWERK, Stefan Rohrer’s sculpture and the ART LOOP. The designated starting points for circular routes and Lichthölzle add hiking and nature to these themes. You can take into account which of these interests matter to you when planning your stay and choosing a hotel.
