Nature in the Eriskircher Ried

In June, the meadows of the Eriskircher Ried turn blue as the irises bloom. If you would like to experience this seasonal display in particular, June is a specific point of reference for planning your trip. The Ried includes wet meadows, the Schussen and its backwaters, floodplain forests and the shallow-water zone of Lake Constance. These habitats provide a home for many animals and plants. In the Lake Constance district, the Eriskircher Ried is the largest and most valuable nature reserve on the German shore of the Upper Lake, offering opportunities to experience local nature. The Eriskirch Nature Conservation Centre offers nature walks, talks and special activities for children throughout the year.

Church and art

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is a landmark of Eriskirch. Its pointed tower is 61 metres high. An art installation provides another distinctive feature: just before the Schussen flows into Lake Constance at Eriskirch, six water guardians stand arranged in a parabolic formation. Their names refer to virtues, the intellect and love. In contrast to the parish church, the group of figures creates a different focal point: here, several figures take centre stage, along with their form and thematic names.

Cycling and swimming

You can swim in Lake Constance. Eriskirch lido also has a beach volleyball court. If you plan to visit the lido, check its seasonal opening times before you go. The Lake Constance Cycle Path runs along the edge of the Eriskircher Ried, following the railway line between Friedrichshafen and Langenargen. The local settings therefore differ depending on what you choose: swimming is all about Lake Constance and the lido, while cycling takes you along the edge of the Ried and beside the railway line.

The wider setting: Lake Constance district

The Lake Constance district stretches along almost the entire northern shore of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg and extends into the Upper Swabian Hills and, to the east, the West Allgäu Hills. Its landscape is shaped by Lake Constance and the adjoining hills, with fruit orchards, vineyards, meadows and forests; the district has 57.7 kilometres of Lake Constance shoreline.

In the Lake Constance district, the pile dwellings at Unteruhldingen offer an archaeological highlight: they are Germany’s oldest archaeological open-air museum. The visitor route includes the ARCHAEORAMA multimedia show, featuring a virtual dive to the pile dwellings in Lake Constance. In Überlingen, the Bodensee-Therme combines thermal bathing, sauna infusions, its own bathing beach and panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Alps. Its thermal water is sourced from a depth of more than 1,006 metres and flows into all the warm-water pools. The Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen displays almost 400 exhibits across 6,000 square metres, including 14 original aircraft and a helicopter. Salem Monastery and Palace was founded as a Cistercian monastery in 1134 and is one of the most beautiful and significant cultural monuments in the Lake Constance region.
