The planetary trail leading to the observatory, historic buildings and paths through the cultivated landscape give Gondelsheim a variety of highlights. When planning your trip, you can choose between astronomy, local history and nature.

Buildings and Local History

Gondelsheim Castle was built between 1857 and 1861 in the Anglo-Scottish style; Art Nouveau wings were added in 1906. The Old Tower stands on a hill near the castle. It is the remnant of a fortified church from the 12th or 13th century and is considered Gondelsheim’s oldest building. The castle and tower therefore offer different historical points of reference: the 19th-century castle and the history of the medieval fortified church.

The Gondelsheim Nymph Fountain is a replica of Walter Schott’s original, “Three Dancing Girls,” from 1903. A signposted historical trail connects landmarks from Gondelsheim’s history. This places individual buildings and works of art alongside a route that brings together several historical landmarks.

Astronomy and Route Planning

The 2 km planetary trail in the Gondelsheim municipal area leads to the observatory. Ten panels on stand-mounted posts show the planets from the Sun to Pluto at a scale of 1:4 billion and illustrate their relative sizes. The trail thus combines a specific route length with a model that clearly demonstrates the sequence and relative sizes of the planets.

The “Kraichgau-Sternwarte Gondelsheim” association regularly offers night-time “sky excursions” for anyone interested. If you would like to plan an activity like this, check the association’s current schedule.

Two longer routes are also described to help compare route lengths: the approximately 8.5 km Riedwiesenweg and the approximately 9 km Karrheckenweg pass through Gondelsheim’s cultivated landscape and offer insights into local history. The planetary trail is listed as considerably shorter, at 2 km. It also has a different theme: the planetary model is the main focus, while the two longer routes combine the cultivated landscape with local history.

Nature and Cultivated Landscape

The hedgerow nature trail serves nature conservation and environmental education. Native shrubs, wild roses and vegetation typical of the area have been planted along several hundred metres and accompanied by explanatory panels. Visitors can also learn about animal species along the trail. The plantings and information make the trail a distinct nature-focused feature among Gondelsheim’s routes.

A landscape conservation area covering more than 22 hectares has protected a diverse section of the historically shaped Kraichgau landscape since 2008. Its habitats include wet woodland, fallow meadows with reed beds, tall-sedge marshes, ditches and ponds, as well as orchard meadows and hedgerows. The habitats range from wetland areas to orchard meadows and woody vegetation, providing a landscape setting for a nature theme distinct from the environmental education offered by the hedgerow nature trail.
