Wüstenrot lies at just under 500 metres above sea level in the heart of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, between the Lauter Valley and the Brettach Valley. The surrounding area combines marked circular hiking trails and Nordic walking routes with forests, meadows, lakes and designated cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Wüstenrot, you can tailor your trip to these interests: hiking, nature watching, cycling routes or the history of the town.

Hiking among Forests, Meadows and Lakes

More than 80 km of marked circular hiking trails run through Wüstenrot. The trail network comprises 13 marked circular routes, with hikes lasting from 1.5 to 3.5 hours. The trails pass through shady forests and by fields, meadows and picturesque lakes. One specific example is Wüstenrot Circular Hiking Trail 3: it starts at Wellingtonienplatz and runs through Wüstenrot.

At Wellingtonienplatz, the giant trees take centre stage: they reach almost 45 m in height and up to 165 cm in diameter, measured at a height of 1.5 m. In the Löwenstein forestry district, they are among the tallest and thickest trees. Wellingtonias more than a hundred years old also grow in the forests of Wüstenrot and neighbouring Löwenstein. This makes it possible to combine a walk through the woodland landscape with a look at trees of exceptional dimensions.

Experience Nature and Check Trail Conditions

The Dachsi Nature Experience Trail in Wüstenrot is a 2.6 km circular route through meadows and forest, along the Dachsbach stream and the Finsterroter See. It includes 11 points of interest. Around Finsterroter See, the trail offers opportunities to observe nature and discover butterflies, dragonflies, bees and the underwater world.

When planning this route, it is important to consider the conditions: the Dachsi Nature Experience Trail requires sure-footedness and sturdy footwear. Because some sections are narrow and unpaved, it is unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. This restriction applies to the Nature Experience Trail and should not be taken to apply to the other hiking trails.

There is also a dedicated route network for Nordic walking. Wüstenrot has been a Nordic Walking Centre of the German Ski Association since June 2007. Twelve routes pass through the Wüstenrot forest landscape and cover around 80 km in total, with up to 300 metres of elevation gain. Parking is available at every starting point of the Nordic walking routes; they are signposted throughout and equipped with pulse-measuring stations.

Cycling and Other Activities

The 5-District Cycle Tour starts and ends in Wüstenrot and connects five districts. It is a challenging route: three long climbs make it a test even for experienced cyclists. The route mainly follows roads with little traffic; only in exceptional cases do you need to use busier roads. The information about the climbs and road conditions gives you specific points to consider if you are thinking of making cycling the focus of your stay.

The high ropes course in Wüstenrot is the first freestanding high ropes course in Baden-Württemberg and can only be booked in advance. Take this booking requirement into account when planning a visit.

Museums and a Nearby Silver Mine

The Building Society Museum in Wüstenrot displays documents about the life and work of Georg Kropp and the founding of the Wüstenrot Building Society. The Glass Museum has a collection of valuable glassware and other objects from early glassmaking. The two museums focus on different subjects: one explores the history of building societies and Georg Kropp, while the other is devoted to early glassmaking.

The silver mine is located near the destination, about 150 m beyond the edge of Wüstenrot in the direction of Schmellenhof. It consists of the “Unverhofftes Glück” tunnels, 127.6 m long, and “Soldatenglück”, 34.85 m long. The mine is not accessible to visitors because of falling debris and to protect wildlife.
