The Hilzinger Mill and two circular trails

The Hilzinger Mill was built in 1621 and is considered one of the oldest still-operational mills in Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald. Its exterior can be viewed at any time. Groups can arrange visits inside, including mill operations, with the municipality; please agree on a date in advance.

A 9.1-kilometre circular hike also leads to the Hilzinger Mill. It links narrow paths along the Glotter with shady woodland and sunnier sections, and includes 362 metres of ascent and descent.

Another circular hike in Oberglottertal follows traces of medieval mining and the Urgraben over 10.5 kilometres. It takes about 3.5 hours and includes 350 metres of ascent and descent. Remains of the medieval water channel and traces of mining can be seen along the route. The Urgraben carried water from the eastern flank of the Kandel to mines in Glottertal and Suggental.

By comparison, the Urgraben circular trail is 1.4 kilometres longer than the 9.1-kilometre trail to the mill; the elevation gains of 350 and 362 metres are close. Trail surfaces and conditions may vary seasonally on both hikes.

The vineyard variation leads into the vineyards of Eichberg and through the heart of the Glottertal wine-growing area, the “Roter Bur” site. It offers views across the valley and shares information about Glottertal wine. The Glotterbad variation leads to the origins of the historic Glotterbad sanatorium; three themed panels explain the eventful history of Glotterbad from the 15th century to the present day.

The Urgraben variation of the Discovery Trail in the wider Glottertal area is a separate short circular hike of just under eight kilometres. It focuses on mining in Glottertal and the “Urgraben” technical monument, making it shorter than the separate 10.5-kilometre circular hike in Oberglottertal. Glottertal also has 100 kilometres of marked hiking trails. The Glottertal nature loungers are accessible via marked hiking trails and offer places to take a break amid nature and at scenic spots on hikes around Glottertal.
