Hausen an der Würm: Townscape, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Hausen an der Würm
The historic town center, the Würm Bridge, and the Frohn Mill shape the architectural character of Hausen an der Würm. The Land.Tour GrenzRäume adds a hiking route with specific distance and time details. When planning your stay, you can focus on architectural history or outdoor activity as distinct interests.
Town Center, Church, and Würm Bridge
The historic town center lies on the western bank of the Würm. There stands the Protestant St. Silvester Church, whose core dates back to the Middle Ages. The townscape also includes numerous buildings from the 17th to the 19th century. Different periods of construction thus come together in one town center, without conflating the later buildings with the church’s medieval core.
The Würm Bridge lies east of the historic town center. The stone bridge has five arches and projecting cutwaters, and was built in 1777 by stonemason J. Wielandt. Its exact construction date sets it apart in time from the medieval core of St. Silvester Church. This provides two specific reference points for understanding local history: the older church building and the dated bridge.
The Frohn Mill North of Hausen
The Frohn Mill lies north of Hausen an der Würm. The complex includes a mill building with three grinding runs and one hulling run, a residential building, the ruins of a cellar house, and a bakehouse. There is also a mill channel and an arched bridge over the Würm. The site therefore encompasses more than just the mill building: residential and agricultural buildings, ruins, and water-related features all form part of the historic ensemble.
Hiking the Land.Tour GrenzRäume
The official Land.Tour GrenzRäume route leads from Hausen an der Würm to Münklingen. It is 5.73 kilometers long, with around 134 meters of ascent and descent, and takes about 1.5 hours. These details give you a specific basis for estimating how long the hike will take. Route specifications may be adjusted as the trail is occasionally updated.
The trail runs mainly along paved agricultural and forestry roads. It also includes about two kilometers of forest path with exposed roots. Sure-footedness is required in some places; the route is not suitable for strollers. Trail conditions may change seasonally or after maintenance work. Check the latest route details and conditions before setting out.
Weil der Stadt: Planets, Museums, and Fasnet
Weil der Stadt offers a distinct focus on astronomy and cultural history. In spring 2012, the Kepler Society and the town of Weil der Stadt established a planetary trail along a hiking route in the northern Würm Valley. The trail is 10.1 kilometers long; walking time alone is about 2¾ hours. It can also be explored by bicycle. The information panels about the Sun and the inner rocky planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are located within the town of Weil der Stadt. The trail also includes a Neptune endpoint in neighboring Tiefenbronn.
The estimated times allow for a brief comparison with the Land.Tour GrenzRäume: the route from Hausen an der Würm to Münklingen is listed at around 1.5 hours, while the planetary trail in Weil der Stadt takes about 2¾ hours. Their lengths also differ, at 5.73 and 10.1 kilometers. This makes it possible to compare the two routes by time and distance without treating them as one continuous trail.
The Kepler Museum is housed in the birthplace of astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571–1630). Some of his major works are on display there, mostly in original editions. The Weil der Stadt Town Museum presents the town’s history as an immersive chronicle across 15 rooms on three floors. The ground floor focuses on the political history of the Imperial City of Weil, from the Middle Ages until the end of its imperial immediacy in 1802.
The historic old town of Weil der Stadt has its own architectural character: narrow lanes and half-timbered houses cluster around the Catholic town church of St. Peter and Paul. The Fools’ Museum explains why Weil der Stadt has been considered a stronghold of fools since the 17th century and how Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet mingled there with Rhenish-Franconian Carnival. Life-size figures illustrate the different groups in Weiler Fasnet. Meisterin Eva’s Puppet Room houses a collection of more than sixty hand puppets from the Hohnstein Puppet Theatre. The “Weiler Clowns” carnival guild regularly stages plays written by Rudolf Karl himself; check the current program before planning to attend a performance. Visitors can experience Weil der Stadt’s long-standing Fasnet tradition.
