Lagarde-D'apt combines stargazing with the landscape of the Plateau d'Albion and themes related to lavender. It also offers a chapel with a long building history and traces of the area's past. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: a visit to the Observatoire Sirene, a view of the high-altitude landscape, or an insight into lavender cultivation and distillation.

Starry skies at the Observatoire Sirene

The Observatoire astronomique Sirene is located within the municipality. It welcomes visitors for observations and to explore the sky, and offers a 360-degree panorama. The programme includes night walks, evenings dedicated to exploring the sky, and daytime visits. The daytime visits and evening activities therefore differ mainly in their timing and their respective focus on the sky.

The Observatoire Sirene is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Visitors are welcomed year-round by prior reservation only; the terms of the offer may change. Therefore, confirm the reservation and visit arrangements in advance. This will help you keep both the access requirement and your preferred programme focus in mind.

High plateau and protected landscape

Lagarde-d'Apt is located on the Plateau d'Albion at an altitude of more than 1,000 metres. From Mont Saint Pierre, the highest point in the Monts de Vaucluse, the view extends across Mont Ventoux and the Montagne de Lure to the snow-capped peaks of the Pre-Alps.

Another connection with nature is the Réserve biologique intégrale de Lagarde-d'Apt. It covers 124.15 hectares and is classified as an IUCN Category Ia protected area.

Lavender: route and carriage ride

The Routes des Lavande route includes a stop in Lagarde-d'Apt to admire the lavender fields and take a photo break. The appearance of the fields depends on the season. The route covers everything from the fields and harvest to distillation and culinary specialities such as baguette with lavender flower water. In this way, the landscape, processing and use of lavender are presented as different aspects of the same theme.

The Balade en calèche avec L'Or des Lavandes offers a different perspective: the one- to three-hour carriage ride passes through the Fra family's organic lavender farm. Visitors learn about lavender cultivation, distillation, properties and history. The route, with its stop to admire the fields, and the carriage ride therefore offer different highlights: the former focuses on taking in the landscape, while the latter provides a more clearly defined experience with information about cultivation and processing.

Chapel and local history

The Chapelle Notre Dame de Lamaron dates from the 11th century and was partially rebuilt in 1667. Its architectural features include a single-nave body, a semicircular apse from the 11th century, a porch and a bell tower. The dates reveal two phases in its building history: its medieval origins and the later partial reconstruction.

The village's history is also associated with a specific date. Lagarde-d'Apt was founded in 1626 on the initiative of the Duke of Lesdiguières, who offered land to thirteen families. In the 20th century, the village was also an important Resistance site; numerous parachute drops took place there, led by Fernand Jean d'Apt and the Maquis Ventoux. These details distinguish the village's founding history from its later role in the Resistance.

Regional cuisine and direct sales

Le Bistrot de Lagarde serves refined, colourful Mediterranean cuisine. It features regional produce and reflects the chef's Italian roots, with dishes adapted to the changing seasons. Its seasonal approach means the culinary selection changes throughout the year.

L'Or des Lavandes also has a farm shop selling products from its own operation. The know-how passed down there over seven generations adds a focus on produce and craftsmanship to the lavender theme. Together, the cuisine, direct sales and route offer different ways to explore the region's food and product culture.
