Ansouis brings together several distinct reasons to stay: the Château with its park and gardens, the Église Saint-Martin parish church, the Musée extraordinaire and the weekly market. For planning, it is especially important to distinguish between regular and seasonal events. The market takes place on Sunday mornings; the Château is accessible only as part of a guided tour and with advance reservation, while village tours follow a seasonal schedule. This makes it possible to plan the market, Château visit and village tour within their respective time slots.

Château d’Ansouis: Historic Estate and Views

The Château d’Ansouis and its park were classified as historic monuments by decree of 10 May 1948. The listed features include the remains of the fortification walls and the square tower. The terraced gardens overlook the Vallée d’Aigues; the Château also offers panoramic views. A visit therefore brings together two aspects: the fortified architecture and its surviving features, and the views from the gardens.

The Château can be visited only as part of a guided tour and with advance reservation. If you plan to include it in your itinerary, make a reservation beforehand and check the seasonal visiting arrangements before your trip. The Château visit, which requires a reservation, should be distinguished from the guided walks through the village: these are separate offerings with different planning requirements.

Church and Musée extraordinaire

The Église Saint-Martin parish church is also classified as a historic monument. The designation also covers its semicircular porch and is based on a decree of 24 October 1988. Alongside the Château, it offers another architectural point of interest, with the porch being a distinctive feature of the church.

The Musée extraordinaire offers a different thematic focus. It displays corals, shells and fish from the collection assembled by Georges Mazoyer over 40 years. Thus, historic buildings and a collection gathered over several decades can be found side by side in Ansouis. If you organize your visits by interest, you can distinguish between architecture and natural objects rather than combining both themes in one tour.

Planning the Weekly Market and Village Tours

The Ansouis weekly market takes place every Sunday morning at the foot of the village, on Place de la Vieille Fontaine. If your stay includes a Sunday, you can plan around this regular event. In the warmer months, the market offers fresh fruit and vegetables, prepared foods, local products and other goods. The time of year, as well as the day of the week, therefore matters when planning a visit to the market.

Guided tours of the village are offered by Ansouis Patrimoine in collaboration with the Office de Tourisme Sud Luberon. They resume in spring and take place twice a month through October. This seasonal schedule differs from the weekly market day: check the current schedule of village tours for your travel dates, and make the required reservation in advance for a Château visit. This way, you can keep track of the different scheduling requirements without treating the market, village walk and Château visit as a single guided-tour program.
