Caumont-Sur-Durance offers a range of interests to help you plan your trip: the Roman Garden combines landscaped grounds with a Gallo-Roman heritage, while Colline de Piécaud offers panoramic views and opportunities for nature watching. The Demoiselle Festival adds a recurring event in September to these themes. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the gardens, landscape and event date separately.

Garden Design at the Roman Garden

The Roman Garden is a restored and landscaped Gallo-Roman garden on the site of a Roman villa dating from the 1st century. The reconstructed garden covers 12,000 m² and is divided into eight themed gardens. This brings the villa's historical connection and a landscaped garden together in one place. You can therefore combine a visit with an interest in both archaeological context and garden design. Admission to the Roman Garden is free.

An ornamental pool in the Roman Garden is 65 metres long and 3.20 metres wide. Its floor is laid with nearly 55,000 coloured terracotta tiles in opus spicatum. The term refers to a herringbone pattern of laid tiles. The pool is considered the largest ornamental pool known to date in Gaul. In addition to its size, the laying technique is a specific detail to look out for during your visit to the garden.

Panoramic Views and Nature at Colline de Piécaud

The orientation table on Colline de Piécaud offers panoramic views of Mont Ventoux, the Alpilles, the Durance and the agricultural plain. The site is also suitable for observing migratory birds. If you are interested in landscapes and nature watching, you will find two different points of interest here: views of the landscape features named above and the chance to observe migratory birds.

Colline de Piécaud, with the Sentier de la Garance, also offers a hike with exceptional panoramic views and is well suited to people interested in nature and ornithology. The trail offers a different focus from the orientation table: a hike centres on the route, while the table relates to panoramic views of the features named above. Because of its rich biodiversity, the hill is designated an « Espace Naturel Sensible » (Sensitive Natural Area). If this designation is important to your plans, check the current status in advance.
