Faucon: History, Views and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Faucon
Faucon combines a historic village setting with hiking trails and views of the Prealps and Mont Ventoux. Perched on a hill, the village is an old fortified town; its houses are built from local stone.
Village Setting, Fortifications and Views
A medieval arch on Rue du Belvédère overlooks the valley and frames a view of the northern side of Mont Ventoux. The village panorama also extends to the Prealps. Ruined towers remain from Faucon’s former fortifications; traces of the feudal castle can be discovered from Rue de l’Aparand. Two different perspectives come together in the village setting: the wide view from the arch and the structural traces of the fortifications. The houses built from local stone add to these signs of the history of the fortified town.
Churches, Chapels and the Prieuré
The Prieuré Saint-Germain is listed as an archaeological site and priory. It has been listed as a Monument historique since April 7, 1992; the listing covers the priory, its outbuildings, ruins and archaeological remains, as well as the property, cadastral parcel B 54. Remains of a Gallo-Roman villa were discovered at the priory. A building with a central courtyard also once stood on the site of today’s church. The parish church of Saint-Germain was restored in 1668 and 1677. The Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs Chapel dates from 1644 and was restored in 1850; an immersive 360-degree video is available for it. The Sainte Colombe Chapel contains a stone bearing the signature of the stonemason UGO. These dates point to different historical layers: the parish church underwent two restorations in the 17th century, while Notre-Dame combines a construction date from that century with a restoration in the 19th century. The priory and the single signed stone also represent two different scales of local history.
Walks and Hikes
The municipality particularly recommends the walk at Pont du Gourmier on the edge of Faucon. The circular route “La randonnée de Faucon” by Terra Rando starts in Faucon and is 7.0 km long. Route 5 of the Chapel Trail reaches Faucon via Pont du Gournier, then continues to the Sainte Colombe Chapel and into the Jau forest. Forest paths from Faucon lead into the surrounding countryside and to the vineyards; you can reach the Ouvèze via the hamlet of Beaumettes. The multi-village puzzle game “La disparition de la Comtesse” includes Faucon; the route starts in Saint-Romain-en-Viennois. The information answers different planning questions: the circular route starts in Faucon, the Chapel Trail reaches the village on its way to other destinations, and the puzzle game starts in Saint-Romain-en-Viennois. This makes it possible to tell whether Faucon is the starting point, a stop along the way or part of an activity spanning several villages.
