Le Revest-Les-Eaux: History, Performance and Nature
Accommodation in Le Revest-Les-Eaux
Le Revest-Les-Eaux brings together historic sites, sacred art, a multidisciplinary performance programme and landscapes around Mont Caume and Lac du Revest. When choosing a destination, you can therefore weigh up different priorities: the history of the fortifications and the town, collections and performances, or nature and activities by the lake. This gives you several clearly distinct areas of interest to consider when planning your trip.
History and sacred art
On Mont Caume, at an elevation of 765 to 778 metres, stands the Batterie, or ouvrage Est du Mont Caume, in Le Revest-Les-Eaux. It is the highest 19th-century work in Toulon’s land defences. Construction took place in 1889. Its elevation, construction date and military classification provide a specific point of reference if you are interested in the history of Toulon’s defences.
The Vieille Valette, or Tourris, site is an oppidum and a fortified village with a castle, church and village. The Église Saint-Christophe was consecrated in 1679 and is under the dual protection of Saint James the Greater and Saint Christopher. The church’s furnishings and paintings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Its history thus spans a castle and village site as well as sacred art from several centuries.
At the Musée d’Art Sacré, two faith traditions can be distinguished through its collection galleries. One floor in the western section displays objects from the Roman Catholic faith, mostly from France and Italy. A floor in the eastern section presents objects from the Orthodox tradition, particularly from Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece and Russia. Visits to the museum are available on request. The different floor locations and regions of origin offer a specific point of comparison during your visit.
Performing arts at the Maison des Comoni
Le PÔLE is a venue recognised as a “Scène conventionnée d’intérêt national – Art en territoire” at the Maison des Comoni in Le Revest-Les-Eaux. Its multidisciplinary programme includes circus, theatre, dance and cine-concerts. The performance programme also features music, street arts, puppetry and object theatre. Alongside historic sites, the town’s cultural offerings therefore include a variety of performing arts.
Nature between Mont Caume and Lac du Revest
The Domaine de La Ripelle is a 78-hectare natural area with coniferous forests, agricultural terraces known as restanques, and an olive grove. The terraces and olive grove add agricultural features to the forest landscape.
The landscape of the “Mont Caume” ZNIEFF includes cliffs shaped by erosion, vast scree slopes and rocks formed by water and wind. The type 2 “Mont Caume” ZNIEFF is located in the municipality of Le Revest-Les-Eaux. The INPN edition dated 12 June 2025 lists 28 animal species of particular conservation interest there, including eight key species. The landscape features and species present are two distinct aspects of this natural area.
At Lac du Revest, the wooded shore is a starting point for walks in the surrounding hills. The lake is also a place for fishing. In contrast to the rocky, scree-covered terrain of Mont Caume, the focus here is on the lakeshore landscape and water-based activities.
From the Tour sarrasine, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Toulon, the sea, Mont Faron, Mont Caume, and the dam and its lake. The panorama complements the individual landscape features with a sweeping view of these places and natural landmarks.
