If you are looking for hotels in Villar-Saint-Pancrace, the area’s natural and cultural sites can help guide your trip planning. Around the Bois des Ayes, the lake, forest, and trails take center stage; chapels, a church, a mill, and other historic sites offer different ways to explore the history of the area.

Forest, lake, and trails

Lac de l’Orceyrette lies in the Bois des Ayes, within its biological reserve, and shimmers emerald green. The Bois des Ayes covers almost 400 hectares and has a high proportion of old-growth trees. At the lake, scenery and outdoor recreation come together: it is a good spot for family picnics and fishing. Local conditions may affect access, so check them before your visit.

For a hike to the Col des Ayes, the GR5 passes through the Bois des Ayes and its biological reserve, reaching the boundary of the Parc Naturel Régional du Queyras. Seasonal conditions may affect access. If you choose this route, check conditions before setting out.

The trail to the Refuge des oiseaux du Moulin de Sachas offers a different focus. Information panels, bird and bat nesting boxes, and insect nests provide insights into forest wildlife. The nature experiences therefore have different themes: the hike to the Col des Ayes passes through forest and reserve to the boundary of the regional park, while the trail to the Refuge explains the forest’s wildlife.

Lac de l’Orceyrette also offers a distinctive connection to the area’s natural environment: its location in the Bois des Ayes links it to the forest and its biological reserve. If you are planning a visit to the lake, you will find a spot there for a family picnic as well as an opportunity to fish. You can get a free map for the Sentier Botanique du Bois du Villard at the Centre Montagne in Villar-Saint-Pancrace. Check before your trip whether the map is available there.

Chapels and architectural history

The Chapelle Saint-Pancrace features monumental murals dating from the mid-15th century and its second half. It was classified as a historic monument by decree dated October 11, 1990. The Chapelle des Pénitents was listed as a historic monument by decree dated July 7, 1965. The two chapels therefore have different dates of designation, while the murals in the Chapelle Saint-Pancrace offer a distinct glimpse of 15th-century art.

A church dedicated to Saint Pancras is documented in Villar-Saint-Pancrace in 1168. The parish church of Villar-Saint-Pancrace was built in the Romanesque style in 1542 under the direction of the architect Ristolani. A local pilgrimage forms part of the area’s history in the late Middle Ages. These historical references cover different aspects: an early mention of a church dedicated to the saint, the construction history of the parish church, and the tradition of a pilgrimage.

Places of work in the past

The Moulin de Sachas was built in the 18th century and allowed families from Villar-Saint-Pancrace to grind their flour. The Espace four explores the history of various farm ovens used to produce lime or plaster. Both sites offer insights into work in the past, but their primary functions differed: the mill ground flour, while the ovens produced lime or plaster.

The Mine de la Cabane is the only farm coal mine in Villar-Saint-Pancrace that is open to visitors. Tours are organized seasonally and may also be available by reservation. On a guided tour, you enter a tunnel with a lamp and helmet and learn about the working conditions of farm miners in the past. In Villar-Saint-Pancrace, the 36e CTE also built the “Route des Espagnols” and the Prelles Tunnel.

The nature trails, buildings, and sites associated with work in the past offer different themes for planning your trip. You could, for example, focus on the forest and lake scenery, explore the historic chapels and their art, or learn about the history of the mill, ovens, and mining.
