Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas: Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas
Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas offers cultural history, museums and trails with a range of different focuses. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you might first consider whether you’re most interested in local history, a museum tour or outdoor activities. The specific features of each offering can help you match your interests with your travel plans.
Culture and local history
The municipal Médiathèque offers collections, services and events for children and adults throughout the year. It has a 185 m² space. Every year, the Médiathèque also takes part in “Partir en livre”, a summer festival held outside the library and dedicated to children’s and young adult literature. Dates vary, so check the specific dates if you want the festival to coincide with your stay.
Five themed rooms are spread across 400 m² at the Musée du moulin. They offer an introduction to the Champsaur region, everyday life and traditional occupations. The lively, participatory tours demonstrate activities such as breadmaking and weaving wool and hemp. Alongside its exhibition themes, the museum therefore also focuses on passing on traditional practices.
The Chapelle des Patarons is a distinctive landmark in local history. Dating from 1814, it features geometric wall paintings and a remarkable altarpiece. Its familiar name is linked to the “Petite Église” in the Champsaur: after the 1801 Concordat, some residents joined this group because they rejected the reforms. The chapel’s historical association and year of construction refer to two different points in time. The Église paroissiale Saint-Nicolas also offers a specific historical reference: the year 1852 is inscribed on its lintel.
The restored Manoir de Prégentil is privately owned. Its construction is thought to date to the first quarter of the 16th century; it was listed as a Monument historique in 1988. These different perspectives complement one another in exploring local history: a chapel’s artistic features, a religious association passed down through history, and the dating of a historic residence.
Trails and outdoor activities
The challenging Le Palastre hike starts in Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas and is a 9.4 km round trip with 667 metres of elevation gain. The climb passes through mountain pastures and alpine grassland to a summit with remarkable views over the Champsaur valley, the Gap area and the surrounding mountain ranges. Distance, the return route and elevation gain together give a more complete picture of the hike than the distance alone.
The Le circuit de l'Adou loop starts in Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas, with information panels along the way about aquatic habitats. Les rives du Drac follows a different route: it runs along the Drac to Les Ricous, then returns via the covered Canal de Gap beneath the La Sapinière forest. The described trails therefore differ in both their routes and the landmarks mentioned.
For cross-country mountain biking, the Bike park du Châtelard offers 2.8 km of purpose-built trails, including a green, a blue and a red route. Opening is seasonal and may vary. The Base de loisirs du Châtelard has sports courts and fields for basketball, handball, volleyball, five-a-side football, field hockey, badminton and tennis-ball. It also has children’s play equipment, a roller hockey rink, a skatepark, an orienteering course and a picnic area.
The Patinoire de Pont du Fossé is also seasonal: the 720 m² outdoor artificial ice rink also offers an entertainment programme and operates during certain seasons. Pont-du-Fossé provides access to the high valleys and the southwestern entrances to the Parc national des Écrins. If you’re planning around seasonal activities or trail conditions, it’s worth checking the relevant dates and conditions before your visit.
