Gap combines a historic city centre with museums, architecture, an outdoor art trail and green spaces. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural sites open year-round and seasonal offerings: the art trail is a summer attraction, while the Gapen'cimes Trail takes place in autumn. Museums, religious buildings and parks also offer a range of different themes.

Art and culture in Gap

The recurring summer art trail “À ciel ouvert…!” transforms squares, streets and parks in Gap into open-air galleries with sculptures and installations. At its 14th edition in 2026, eight new works joined those already in the city. If you want to plan your trip around this offering, bear in mind that it takes place in summer and that the programme varies by edition.

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Arnoux is a listed historic monument and a defining feature of Gap, with its polychrome façade and imposing bell tower. It is open year-round and free to visit, except during religious services. This exception is relevant to visitors; the cathedral is a striking landmark, but access is restricted at certain times.

The Musée muséum départemental has been open to the public since 1910. Its notable works and collections include the monumental Mausolée de Lesdiguières; the collection on Alpine archaeology spans 13,000 years of history. The museum therefore offers a perspective that ranges from a single monumental work to a long view of Alpine archaeology.

The Ecomusée de l'artisanat des Hautes-Alpes focuses on regional history. It traces the agricultural, economic and human history of the Hautes-Alpes from 1790 to 1950. During educational tours, you can choose two of five themes. These include a working clog-maker’s workshop, the craft of the master wheelwright, mechanical power and the forge. The options bring together different aspects of past daily life and craftsmanship without limiting the experience to a single theme.

Historic traces and green spaces

In the historic centre, narrow, interconnected lanes and tall houses preserve traces of Gap’s past as a fortified town. Napoleon’s return from Elba also left a historical connection to the city: in 1815, Gap was a stop along the Route Napoléon. The Chapelle des Pénitents adds another layer to this history through its changing use. Once a place of prayer, it now serves as a concert hall.

The green spaces offer a different focus. The Jardin alpin de Gap-Charance showcases 20 natural and semi-natural habitats of the French Alps. In the Parc de la Pépinière, centuries-old trees and shady paths shape the landscape; it also has a children’s play area, swings and picnic tables. The two sites are distinguished by the features described for each: Alpine habitats at one, and old trees and park facilities at the other.

The Domaine de Charance welcomes walkers, sports enthusiasts and families. It is open daily and free to visit from April to the end of October. As this seasonal access information is important for planning your trip, check it before your visit. This lets you add an outdoor excursion to your stay in Gap while keeping the seasonal opening period in mind.

Plan around seasonal events

The Gapen'cimes Trail is an autumn trail-running event launched in 2008. Several routes are offered, ranging from 1 to 50 kilometres, including a children’s trail and a route for the Challenge des supers héros. The route formats may vary from one edition to another. If you want to plan your visit around the event, check the latest dates and route programme in advance.

Whether you are choosing between culture, nature and an event, Gap offers a range of options: historic buildings and museums sit alongside parks and an Alpine garden, while the art trail and the Gapen'cimes Trail are tied to particular seasons. When planning, you can decide whether to focus your stay on cultural sites, green spaces or a specific seasonal offering.
