Freissinières stretches along the Biaysse as a 20-kilometre-long hanging valley. Hiking trails, a via ferrata, winter sports and historic buildings offer different options for planning your trip.

Hiking between lakes and shorter routes

Le circuit des lacs is a difficult 13.1-kilometre circular hike, for which six hours are indicated. The route passes through larch forests and alpine pastures, and over rock slabs to two lakes in wild cirques. Above the valley, a balcony trail connects Lac Palluel and Lac Faravel. The trail lies within the core zone of Parc national des Écrins.

A much shorter alternative is RANDOLAND: Freissinières, a very easy 1.9-kilometre circular hike. It starts and ends at Place du Souvenir in Ville, Freissinières. The two loops differ in their stated time required, length and difficulty—useful information for choosing a hike that fits your day’s plans.

Winter sports and climbing

The Domaine nordique de Freissinières has around 15 kilometres of trails for skating and cross-country skiing. It operates seasonally, depending on snow conditions. From the N94 between Gap and Briançon, reach the area via the D38 and then the D38b towards Freissinières. The recommended parking area is at Chalet Nordique, opposite Freissinières town hall. Check access and parking conditions before setting off if seasonal changes may apply.

The Tour de glace de Freissinières is an artificial ice-climbing facility with seven ice walls and a dry-tooling area. Another climbing option is the Via ferrata de Freissinières: this sporty via ferrata consists mainly of traverses along a sunny, south-facing limestone wall above the valley. It dates from 1988 and was the first via ferrata in France.

Hamlets, mills and historic buildings

The commune includes 13 hamlets with old buildings, as well as churches, temples and old mills. Moulin des Ribes was built in 1620 by the village lord. It operated until 1945 and was used to produce flour and walnut oil. Today, it is considered an ecomuseum of the valley and a typical example of a mountain mill and Alpine way of life.

The exterior of Eglise Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is strikingly plain: four smooth white walls, a roof and a small bell gable. It may have been the former Temple de Ville, whose existence is documented in the 17th century. A Huguenot cross is located above the entrance to Temple des Viollins. The Genevan pastor Félix Neff inaugurated the temple in 1824.

Plants and visits

Le jardin des Elixirs d'Isabelle grows aromatic, medicinal and digestive plants at an altitude of 1,100 metres. You can visit the garden independently or with a guide. For adults, visits followed by a tasting take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and cost 12 euros. If you plan to attend, check the details in advance.
