When planning a stay in Peynier, you can focus on local history or on trails through the landscape. The buildings represent several clearly datable periods; the communal forest and walking routes draw attention to biodiversity and wildlife. Consider whether you are more interested in architecture and history or in trails and nature.

Heritage in Peynier

The Chapelle Saint-Pierre stands on a prominent rise behind the current cemetery and is protected as a Historic Monument. It was rebuilt in the 12th century in a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic; its architecture includes so-called Lombard vaults. The chapel thus combines a clearly described location with its own history of construction.

The parish church of Saint-Julien adds an early historical reference to this picture: it was first mentioned in 1079, stands within the town walls, and was part of the first castle. Its bell tower has four bells. A large bell dates from 1694 and is also classified as a Historic Monument. The church thus brings together its role in connection with the first castle and a later-dated, protected object.

Rue Joffroy also offers a close-up view of older buildings. It is one of Peynier’s oldest streets; many of its houses date from the Middle Ages. A more precise date is recorded for the house at number 17: it dates from the 14th century. The street as a whole and this individual house therefore represent different scales of historical classification.

The Château de Peynier was built in the mid-16th century and is typical of Provençal Renaissance architecture. Its main façade has two large round towers. The construction date places the château in its historical period, while the towers describe a specific feature of its façade.

Peynier’s oratory heritage includes 21 monuments, recorded in 2003. A mass is celebrated each year at the Chapelle Saint-Pierre on the first Sunday in August; the exact date may vary. If you plan to attend the mass, check the date in advance.

Forest, Hiking Trails, and Landscape

Peynier’s communal forest is distinguished by its biodiversity and walking trails. Its diverse wildlife includes birds and wild boar. Nature enthusiasts will find a different focus here than among the buildings: rather than individual historical periods, the emphasis is on habitats, trails, and wildlife observation.

A regional hiking route description, updated in May 2025, lists the hike Hike in the countryside around Peynier as open to everyone. It passes through the countryside around Peynier. In addition, three historic routes are among the municipality’s heritage trails. These historic trails offer a different focus from the hike through the surrounding countryside.

A Stations of the Cross route between a chapel and the summit of La Cuque hill has 14 stations, each marked by an oratory. This makes the oratory heritage tangible along a trail as well. The Base de Loisirs de la Garenne leisure and sports area also includes an open-air theatre for performances and cultural events outdoors. In Peynier, historic trails, nature, and a venue for cultural events offer different ways to explore the area.
