Maussane Les Alpilles can be explored through several distinct themes: olive oil, village history, art and landscape. For your stay, you can choose your focus based on whether you would like to plan a market visit, see individual cultural landmarks, take a literary-themed walk or follow a designated hiking route. Local experiences also vary in format, from a guided tasting to a permanent exhibition and a free walking tour that is open every day.

Olive Oil and Regional Products

Guided olive oil tastings are offered at the Moulin Cornille. The 300 m² permanent exhibition, Le Grenier à Olives, is also located there. This gives you two different experiences in the same place: a guided tasting and a permanent exhibition. The weekly market, featuring regional products, is held every Thursday morning on Place Henri Giraud. If you would like to plan your visit around market day, check in advance whether Thursday morning is still the market time, as market schedules may change.

Village History, Art and Poets

Le Vieux-Maussane forms the historic center of the village. Local heritage includes the Lavoir Napoléon III, a washhouse in the Second Empire style, built under Napoleon III. The Fontaine des 4 saisons is also part of the local heritage and stands out for its sculptures and ornamentation. These two cultural landmarks each have their own distinctive details: the Lavoir is notable for its building type, style and construction period, while the sculptures and ornamentation define the impression made by the Fontaine.

The Circuit des poètes et personnages illustres offers a different kind of experience. This cultural and artistic walking tour lies in the heart of the village, is free of charge and open every day. It traces the history of Provençal poets. In this way, it differs from visiting individual buildings: a literary theme provides the guiding thread for the walk. The village is also home to a dedicated artwork honoring Emma Catherine Teissier.

Routes with Different Highlights

The 11.1 km Boucle vers les Baux de Provence starts in Maussane. It passes through olive groves and garrigue, as well as landscapes shaped by time, and goes by troglodytic remains and the architectural heritage of the Alpilles. Its length, landscape and heritage give this route its distinctive character. The Chemin des Batignolles has a different focus: it follows the route of a former railway line and offers a way to explore old Maussane. These provide different points of reference when choosing a route: here, the specified distance and landscape features; there, the former railway line and connection to the old village.

Landscape and Watercourse

The Marais de la vallée des Baux et marais d’Arles Natura 2000 site extends partly into Maussane Les Alpilles. Another specific landscape feature is the Gaudre du Trible watercourse: it runs through the village and flows into the Canal de la Vallée des Baux. While the Boucle highlights olive groves and garrigue, the protected area and watercourse point to other landscape features of the commune.
