Meyreuil offers several distinct highlights for a trip: religious buildings with a range of historical details, Provençal festive traditions, a vineyard with a long history, and a designated cycling route. If you’re looking for a hotel in Meyreuil, these themes can help you choose when to travel and plan your days. The places and dates offer clues as to whether architecture, local traditions, landscapes, or cycling should shape your trip.

Chapels, Churches, and Historical Details

The Chapelle Saint-Marc-la-Morée is a Romanesque chapel and part of Meyreuil’s municipal heritage. It belonged to King René from 1471 to 1475. It lies on the right bank of the Arc, among pine and oak trees and close to the ancient Via Aurelia. This place therefore brings together a specific historical connection and a precisely described setting.

The other religious buildings also mark distinct periods. The Chapelle Saint-Antoine de Padoue in Le Plan de Meyreuil was built in 1957, when the neighborhood still had no church and funding was lacking. It has a square bell tower and statues of Saint Anthony and Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. The monumental portal of the Église paroissiale Saint-Marc bears the date 1689; above it stands a small 11th-century statue of Notre-Dame de la Rose. The façade also features an oculus window with a lion motif. These details span a medieval work of art, a dated portal, and a 20th-century chapel, illustrating the variety of periods represented by Meyreuil’s religious buildings.

Published in 2017, the Circuit Patrimoine Sacré n°1 walking tour includes the Église paroissiale Saint-Marc as stop 14 and the Chapelle Saint-Antoine de Padoue in Le Plan de Meyreuil as stop 15. The brochure also lists April 25 as a visiting day for the Chapelle Saint-Marc La Morée. Check the current access arrangements before visiting.

Festivities and Provençal Cuisine

The festive calendar includes recurring events at different times of year. Every year on April 25, a mass is celebrated for the feast of Saint Mark, followed by traditional Provençal daube. On the first Sunday after that date, the Saint-Marc program includes a pilgrimage to the Chapelle Saint-Marc-la-Morée and a craft fair in the village. If you plan your trip around these festivities, check that year’s program.

There are culinary traditions in early December, too: Souper Calendal is a traditional evening when Provençal dishes such as anchoïade, bourride, and the “thirteen desserts” are served. The Crèche animée de Meyreuil opens to the public every year on December 11 and remains on display until February. For both events, check the current program before your trip.

Landscape, Vineyard, and Mining History

Meyreuil is part of the Concors Sainte-Victoire Grand Site de France. Château Simone’s vineyard is a mosaic of plots in a wooded setting; some plots are more than 125 years old. The estate’s cellars were built in the 16th century by the religious order of the Grands Carmes d’Aix. The park gardens of Château Simone connect the terraced vineyards with the banks of the Arc. Here, several different landscape features come together: wooded plots, terraced vines, and the riverbank.

Another historical highlight is the Terril du Défens. In Meyreuil, a footpath leads to this artificial spoil heap, now completely reforested; the path helps preserve the memory of the area’s mining history. This adds an industrial past to the religious and landscape connections.

Cycling Route Through Meyreuil

For a cycling trip, there is the 57-kilometer “Provence mines d’énergies” loop. Designated as a discovery tour, it includes Meyreuil in its route. Before setting off, check the route conditions and downloadable tracks. The stated distance applies to the entire loop; Meyreuil is one part of its route.
