Planning your trip to Cabannes
Cabannes offers a range of themes for planning your trip, from architectural history and historic places of worship to walking trails and the natural landscape along the Durance. If you are looking for a hotel in Cabannes, you can consider whether local history, walking trails, a cycling route or the natural surroundings should be the focus of your stay. The various sights and trails offer different starting points for exploring the area.
Walking trails and route planning
Seven walking trails start at Place de la Mairie, offering a safe way to explore Cabannes and its surroundings. As routes may change over time, check local conditions before setting out. This helps ensure your route planning reflects the actual conditions on the trails.
The Promenade de l’Agoutadou also starts at Place de la Mairie. It is six kilometres long, takes about 30 minutes, follows a shaded route and presents no difficulties. The distance and duration give you two specific points of reference for planning your time. Check local conditions for this route too. This allows you to take both the trail’s stated features and current conditions into account when planning.
Architectural history and historic sites
The Ancien château de Cabannes is located at 5 Rue de l’Église. The entire property was listed as a historic monument by decree on 8 April 2022. The listing includes cadastral plots 11, 12 and 14 in section AA. The details about the address, scope and plots make clear that the protection covers the property as a whole.
The Chapelle Saint-Michel was built in the second half of the 12th century and displays the characteristics of rural Romanesque chapels in Provence. Its history includes various religious uses: until the 13th century, it served as a parish church. In the 17th century, it was revived by the Confrérie des Pénitents Blancs d’Avignon. Its construction date and later use represent different chapters in its history.
Le lavoir is a former covered washhouse that was restored in 1996. It is considered one of the rare so-called standing washhouses, where women did their laundry standing up. This distinctive architectural form connects the site with a specific historical everyday practice. The oratories also have distinct significance: the Oratoire Sainte-Madeleine is dedicated to Cabannes’ patron saint and was built in 1765. The Oratoire Saint-Roch was traditionally visited in August during a procession in honour of the saint; the procession may not take place in the same way today.
At Pont de la République, you can see part of the Agoutadou, an irrigation canal built by the Templars in the 14th century. Along with the chapel and washhouse, this view adds an aspect of historic water management to the area’s history.
Cycling route and nature along the Durance
The Voie Verte La Durance à Vélo is 22.5 kilometres long, runs between Plan-d’Orgon and Rognonas, and passes through Cabannes. Unlike the walking trails, which are described as starting at Place de la Mairie, this cycling route is defined by its two endpoints and its course. The planning details therefore vary by activity: a local starting point is given here, while the route passes through several towns there.
The banks of the Durance near Cabannes are home to a biodiverse natural landscape, where wild animals and plants can be seen. This complements the historic sites and trail themes with a natural setting that will appeal to travellers interested in flora and fauna.
