Le Mas: Romanesque Church, Hiking Trails and August Festival
Accommodation in Le Mas
Le Mas brings together Romanesque architectural history, named hiking destinations, nature themes and a festival held annually in August. This gives you distinct focal points for planning your trip: culture, outdoor activity and a recurring event date.
Romanesque Parish Church and Chapel
The Romanesque parish church of Le Mas was built by monks from Lérins in the 11th and 12th centuries. Its features include a semicircular apse and two bell turrets on the right side of the façade. These architectural features attest to the church’s medieval origins and connect a distinctive form with its building history.
The parish church’s listing in the Répertoire des Bâtiments de France is also part of its history: it was listed by decree on 15 September 1937. Alongside the building’s architectural features, this provides a precisely dated historical reference point.
The Chapel of Saint-Sébastien in Le Mas offers a different artistic connection. The artist Patrick Moya, who is from Nice, decorated and painted the chapel in its entirety. The parish church is characterized by its Romanesque architecture and medieval origins, while the chapel is notable for its design, entirely attributed to Moya.
Hiking: Different Destinations
The Le Mas–La Rivière–Le Mas route leads to a footbridge over the River la Gironde. The landmarks on the Le Mas–Le Charamel–La Clue–Le Mas route are different: it passes over Montagne de Charamel and then reaches the upper part of the Clue de Le Mas. The route descriptions therefore differ in their specific destinations: a footbridge and river on one route, and the mountain and upper section of the Clue on the other.
The Alpes-Maritimes département is responsible for maintaining the Le Mas–Montagne de Charamel route under the PDIPR; its signage and trail markings are also maintained. As these arrangements may change, check the route status before setting out. For the route to la Gironde, also check the condition of the footbridge and current trail conditions; trail conditions on the other routes described should also be factored into your plans.
Nature, Festival and Cuisine
According to visitor information, roe deer, red deer, chamois, mouflon, dormice, songbirds and birds of prey are among the local fauna of Le Mas. The list includes various mammals and bird groups. It offers nature enthusiasts specific subjects to look out for, without promising that they will encounter any of the animals mentioned.
The FĂŞte de la Saint-Arnoux takes place every year in August. If you would like to choose your travel dates around a recurring festival, this is the relevant month to bear in mind.
Auberge Le Mas serves Provençal and Niçoise cuisine with some Italian influences. If you are planning a visit to Auberge Le Mas, check the latest information in advance.
