Caussols lies on a limestone plateau in the Préalpes de Grasse, at an altitude of about 1,100 metres. Together with its location within the Parc Naturel Régional des Préalpes d’Azur, this shapes the area’s landscape. For travellers who enjoy combining their days with hiking, geology or local history, there are several different themes to explore.

Limestone and waterways

The Plateau de Calern is part of the Préalpes de Grasse Natura 2000 site. The Aven Calernaüm, a 481-metre-deep chasm, is located there. Another striking karst feature is the Embut de Caussols: streams on the plateau disappear into this ten-metre-deep chasm and re-emerge in the Gorges du Loup and the Cannes basin. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by what is visible, but also by waterways that cannot be traced continuously at the surface.

Hiking and cycling

Caussols is the starting point for numerous marked hikes across the limestone plateaus. The GR4 follows a clearly defined route, crossing the Plateau de Caussols towards the Col du Clapier. If you are planning a hike, check local trail conditions beforehand. The municipality also provides a hiking map for Caussols; check in advance whether it is currently available. This allows you to distinguish a designated route such as the GR4 from the wider choice of marked hikes, without assuming they all follow the same route.

Cycling circuits are also available in Caussols. Check their availability locally before setting out. Hiking and cycling are two different ways to tailor your trip to your interests; check the specific route conditions before each outing.

Visit to the observatory site

The Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur offers guided tours of the Calern observing site; dates can be booked online. The tour takes place mostly outdoors and includes a 1.5-kilometre walk. Factor this walk into your day’s plans and check the practical details when booking.

The guided visit also includes the Bubble Houses by Antti Lovag. The tour’s content may vary depending on what is operating. If this particular stop interests you, take the current visiting arrangements into account when planning, rather than assuming it is included regardless of the tour programme.

Church and landscape history

The Church of Saint-Lambert is mentioned in papal confirmation charters dating from 1158 and 1189. The present church was rebuilt on the site of an earlier building in the 13th century and has been fully restored. These early written references and the later reconstruction mark different stages in its history.

The pastoral landscape is also shaped by specific features: bories, enclosures, sheepfolds and livestock watering troughs are still scattered across the Caussols landscape. Alongside the building history of Saint-Lambert, these features offer different insights into the area’s past—one through a church building, the other through elements of the landscape.

Local fair

The Fête du Terroir et de l’Elevage is a traditional fair featuring local products, agricultural equipment and livestock. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current programme beforehand. This lets you consider the fair as a possible focus of your visit without assuming a specific date or programme.
