Noyers-sur-Jabron: Churches, Le Vieux Noyers and Hiking
Accommodation in Noyers-sur-Jabron
Noyers-sur-Jabron brings together a medieval settlement, churches built in different periods and several clearly distinct hiking routes. The routes include specific details on distance, duration and ascent; the buildings offer historical and architectural highlights.
Churches and traces of the old village
Le Vieux Noyers is a medieval settlement on the ridge route that connects the villages of the Jabron Valley with Sisteron. Today, only the portal remains of the former fortified castle. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-Bethléem is also located in Le Vieux Noyers and dates from the 13th century. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1913 and was reopened for worship in 1986.
The Church of the Immaculate Conception tells a different story: it was consecrated on 26 August 1860 and features Alpine architecture characteristic of the late 19th century. Its notable furnishings include walnut wood. A rock crystal donated by the famous Eysseric family of Noyers surmounts the bell tower. The date, Alpine architectural style, and wood and crystal details give the church several distinctive historical and design features.
The Chapelle Saint-Claude stands on a terrace on the Rancurel slope. Construction was completed in June 1733. From the chapel, the panorama stretches from the ridges of Lure to the Monts d’Albion. Both the chapel’s position on the terrace and the sweeping view are highlights of this building.
Hikes with different time requirements
The Le Vieux Noyers hike is 2.5 kilometres long, takes about an hour and has 100 metres of ascent. It is considered a short route suitable for families with children and presents no particular difficulties. Nevertheless, take appropriate care around the ruins.
The circular route to Montagne de Pellegrine starts in Noyers-sur-Jabron. It is listed as 21 kilometres long, takes five and a half hours and has 700 metres of ascent. Along the way, it offers a view from the Pellegrine ridge and passes through the section known as Calade at Pas des Portes. Terrain and trail markers may change, so check the trail conditions and signage on site.
The key figures make the difference in time between the two routes clear: Le Vieux Noyers takes around an hour, compared with a five-and-a-half-hour circular hike to Montagne de Pellegrine. This helps you distinguish a shorter outing from a longer day hike and plan your stay accordingly.
The De l’Adret à l’Ubac trail starts in Noyers-sur-Jabron and passes the ruins of the old village. It can be hiked at any time of year. Seasonal hazards may change, so check the conditions before setting out.
