Rougon: Verdon, hiking trails and heritage
Accommodation in Rougon
Anyone looking for a hotel in Rougon for a stay can consider the area through different types of plans: a long hike along the Verdon, a roughly one-hour loop through the village streets, views of the Grand Canyon, vulture watching or climbing. The routes and activities differ considerably, so it is worth considering them separately when planning your trip.
Hiking trails in Rougon
The Sentier Blanc-Martel is a 15 km one-way hike between the Chalet de la Maline in La Palud-sur-Verdon and Point Sublime in Rougon. It follows the Verdon and includes sections with stairs and tunnels. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The GR®4 crosses the municipality of Rougon via the Sentier Blanc-Martel. The GR®49 also passes through the municipality, going via the Pont du Tusset and ending at Point Sublime. The two trails therefore differ in their routes and the waypoints mentioned.
Point Sublime and the Gorges du Verdon
Point Sublime lies on the right bank of the Gorges du Verdon, below the village of Rougon. From the viewpoint, you can see the entrance to the Grand Canyon, shaped by the narrow Couloir Samson. Below, the Verdon appears greenish; opposite are the Paroi du Duc and the Falaises de l’Escalès, which rise to almost 400 m.
A short walk of about ten minutes leads from the Point Sublime car park to the viewpoint. As parking rules may change seasonally, check the current situation in advance.
Village walks and heritage
The cultural and heritage trail starts at a car park, passes through the village lanes and ends on the opposite side. Allow about one hour for the loop. Set aside this time and check the information before your visit; it may be adjusted if the route is updated later.
The medieval quarter, now largely in ruins, retains remarkable architectural features. These include round-arched door surrounds and rounded bossage stones at the corners of buildings. These features probably come from the former castle. The year 1886 is engraved on the south side of the washhouse; it probably marks the completion of the construction work.
For planning a hike, there are therefore different options: the Blanc-Martel, a 15 km one-way route, and the cultural and heritage loop, which takes approximately one hour and passes through the village. The distance and time estimate offer different points of reference for planning.
Vulture watching and climbing
The Sentier des vautours starts at the Carajuan campsite and offers the opportunity to observe griffon vultures and other birds of prey in their natural habitat. The vulture-watching point is near the viewpoint at the Mur d’Abeilles, opposite the vultures’ acclimatisation cage.
Rougon also serves as a base for climbing in the Gorges du Verdon. Most climbing areas on the right bank of the gorge are no more than ten minutes away. If you are planning a climbing trip, this information about the climbing areas provides a concrete reference point for your travel planning.
