In Mison, historic buildings meet lakeside routes and trails around the château. When planning your stay, consider whether you are mainly interested in exploring architectural history or would prefer to focus on trails, the lake and the natural area.

Castle and Architectural History

The hilltop village of Mison is dominated by the remains of a once very imposing castle. The Château de Mison was built as a fortress in the 13th century by the Mévouillon family. The complex is arranged around a central courtyard with four wings flanked by square towers. The courtyard forms the center of the layout; the wings and towers show how the fortress is structured. This makes it possible to understand the château both in its position above the village and in its architectural layout.

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Baume provides a different architectural accent. It is believed to date from the 14th century and was rebuilt in 1602. Its nave has a barrel vault and is entirely surrounded by a gallery. A barrel vault is a long, tunnel-like vault; the gallery runs around the nave. At the church, the vault and surrounding gallery stand out, while the courtyard, wings and towers define the château's form. Visitors comparing architectural styles can observe different features in the two buildings.

At the entrance to the hamlet of Les Armands in Mison is a former 18th-century coaching and postal inn (Relais des Diligences et des Postes). Two opposing gates allowed stagecoaches to pass through. Their arrangement illustrates the building's former function: coaches could enter on one side and leave on the other. The French name refers to stagecoaches and postal services. Together with the fortress and the church, this former post adds a connection to the transport of the time to the area's historic buildings.

Lake and Routes

Lac de Mison-Upaix is visited by anglers and people interested in nature and photography. A loop trail runs around the lake. The facilities around the protected, sensitive natural area are in use. Angling, nature and photography represent different interests in the same lake. Maintenance conditions and seasonal restrictions may change; check the current conditions before your visit.

The cycling loop “Autour du lac de Mison à vélo” starts at the foot of the Château de Mison and follows the D124 and D324 to Lac de Mison, a departmental sensitive natural area. The route offers views of Alpine peaks. Check road conditions and signage before setting off. By contrast, the short family route “Tour du Château de Mison” offers a chance to discover the château and the village below it. It focuses on the castle and village, while the cycling loop follows the roads mentioned above to the lake. You should also check route conditions before setting out on the family route. This lets you choose between focusing on the castle and village or cycling to the natural area.
