La Crèche offers several themes to consider when planning a stay: historic buildings, walking trails, the wetland landscape of the Îles de Candé and markets. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide which of these topics interest you most. The town’s history, the different route descriptions and the market schedules provide practical guidance for planning your trip.

History Between the Cemetery, Church and Mill

The Cimetière ancien de Breloux was established on a hillside below the former priory park in the 17th century. It is overlooked by the remains of an 18th-century dovecote. The cemetery also contains a group of graves typical of the region. The grounds, tower remains and grave styles offer different historical points of interest.

The church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges adds its own timeline to this picture: it was consecrated on 28 May 1858 and elevated to parish church status in 1866. Its organ was installed in 1879. The consecration, parish status and organ installation mark different stages in the church’s history.

The Aumônerie Saint-Jacques represents another role along the historic Way of St. James: in the 15th century, it provided pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela with food and lodging. The Aumônerie also retains a fireplace, a wooden door and a washbasin. Its former function and tangible architectural features come together here.

Industrial history is also represented: the engine room of the Moulin du Pont de Vau still has gears, shafts, pulleys and belts. If you’re interested in architectural and technological history, La Crèche offers a range of subjects—from the historic cemetery and church to the pilgrims’ hostel and mill technology.

Walking Trails and Landscape

The moderate Circuit Breloux-La Crèche is 7.3 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The approximate duration helps with planning your time; the moderate rating is another factor to consider when choosing a route. The Candé-Ruffigny trail passes on foot through the village of Ruffigny and a section of the Sèvre Niortaise valley. The two routes therefore offer different highlights: the Circuit focuses on distance, difficulty and duration, while Candé-Ruffigny takes in the village and valley. Route conditions can change; check them before setting off.

The Îles de Candé invite you to enjoy peaceful walks by the water and a different kind of nature experience. The islands are home to rare plant and animal species within a lush wetland ecosystem. The wetland of the Îles de Candé is managed by the Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The waterside walk and the character of the wetland combine to make this a distinctive landscape attraction.

Markets and Seasonal Dates

The Marché de La Crèche takes place twice a week, on Tuesday and Sunday mornings from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., in and around the market halls in the town centre. On Sundays, the stalls include farm produce, meat, fruit and vegetables, fish, cheese, wine and condiments. The selection may vary.

Mon dîner fermier is a seasonal farmers’ market featuring prepared dishes made from farm produce to take away. It takes place from April to July on the first Thursday of each month, with musical performances regularly on the programme. Dates and months may change, as may the weekly market schedules. If visiting a market is important to your trip, check the latest information in advance. The two markets differ mainly in their frequency and offerings: the twice-weekly market contrasts with a seasonal event featuring prepared dishes and music.
