Combrand: Chapel, Château and Vendée History
Accommodation in Combrand
Combrand offers travellers several distinct points of interest: architectural history at the Chapelle des Arcis, historical links to the Vendée Wars, and a circular walking route through the Ruisseau de Pisse-Vache valley. Local offerings related to vegetables, distillation and glass beads add to the picture. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose between buildings, a walking route and individual activities.
Chapelle des Arcis: Granite and Stained Glass
The Chapelle des Arcis is located in a small park on the edge of Combrand, on the road to Rorthais. Father Jacques Vion, the parish priest of Combrand, had it built in 1866 and immediately donated it to the municipality. The single-nave, single-room building is made of local granite.
A notable detail is the stained-glass window depicting Saint John the Baptist. It dates from 1858 and shows five episodes from the saint’s life across six panels. The window is therefore older than the chapel. In 1876, during construction of the eastern bay, it was moved to the new choir wall. The dates make it easy to trace the sequence of the window’s creation, the chapel’s construction and its later relocation.
Château de la Pastellière and Local History
The Château de la Pastellière is a historic site and monument in Combrand. Water-filled moats surround the château, which is protected by three round towers. These features make the estate quite distinct from the single-nave granite chapel. Check opening hours before planning a visit.
The Vendée Wars also have a specific connection to Combrand: Gaspard de Bernard de Marigny, a Vendée artillery general, was executed in 1794 at the Château de la Girardière in Combrand. This episode adds a specific person and historical event to the architectural history.
Circular Trail in the Ruisseau de Pisse-Vache Valley
The “Sur les pas des Géants” circular trail follows the history of the Vendée Wars. It starts and ends at the car park by Combrand town hall on Chemin St Bréviaire. Confirm the starting point before travelling. As trail conditions can change, it is also advisable to check the latest information before setting out.
The route passes through the Ruisseau de Pisse-Vache valley. It follows ponds and passes a grotto. This circular trail therefore focuses on both its historical theme and the valley landscape, setting it apart from the buildings that also shape the area’s history.
Local Offerings and Activities
In Combrand, GAEC “Légumes and co” offers 70 varieties of vegetables, vegetables for retail sale year-round, pickled vegetables in jars, and strawberries for picking at the farm. Check opening hours before visiting. The offering combines vegetable shopping with other products and picking on site.
In summer, a distillation event is offered at GAEC La Ferme au l’Ouin / Ô lueurs d’Aubépine. A different kind of activity is the workshop by L’ATELIER VERRE ET FEU: it lasts two hours, is intended for one person aged twelve or older, costs from 85 euros and is available by reservation only. During the workshop, five or ten beads are made from Effetre Murano glass rods; they can then be assembled into jewellery. The distinction is important for planning: the distillation event is seasonal, while the workshop requires a reservation.
