The sites also differ in their facilities and visiting conditions.

Natural environment and biodiversity

Carrière de Ricou is designated an Espace Naturel Sensible (sensitive natural area) and is a protected natural site open to the public. Check local access conditions before your visit. An approximately one-kilometre discovery trail with information panels runs through the site; part of the trail is accessible to people with reduced mobility. As facilities may change, check current accessibility before your trip.

Seven habitats are home to remarkable wildlife and plant life, including the thyme azure butterfly and the fire salamander. This natural area can be appreciated both through the short trail and its information panels, and through the diversity of its habitats.

Trails and hikes

The “Le pont romain” hiking route in Azay-le-Brûlé is 13.5 kilometres long and takes 3 hours 30 minutes. It is therefore considerably longer than the approximately one-kilometre discovery trail at Carrière de Ricou. The stated duration gives you a practical reference for planning this hike; check the route conditions before setting out.

The “Balades d’Azay” routes follow paths between trees and hedges, and along the Sèvre Niortaise, the Chambon and the Ligueure. This distinction can help you choose a route: “Le pont romain” is defined by its distance and duration, while the “Balades d’Azay” focus on the surroundings along the way.

Heritage and local traditions

The former priory of Saint-Barthélémy was fortified in 1489; its cloister may date from the 16th century. The fortifications and the possible date of the cloister point to different historical periods. The private section of the former priory can be visited by arrangement with the owners. Confirm the date, availability and conditions in advance. An introduction to beekeeping is also offered.

The Roman bridge bears witness to an ancient trade route to the sea in Roman Gaul. The washhouse at Saint-Carlais, by contrast, is associated with a local legend: two farm workers promised to wash their laundry there together the following day. Here, alongside historic structures, you can also discover a story tied to a specific place.

Wellness and local shopping

The Aqua Severa wellness area includes a sauna, a hammam, a spa, relaxing showers, a solarium and a tea room. Aqua Severa is accessible to people with disabilities. As facilities may change and current accessibility should be confirmed, check both before your trip.

The organic farm GAEC Plaine de Foumard raises goats, makes organic goat’s cheese and sells it at the farm. If you are planning to visit the farm shop, confirm in advance whether it is currently open. Plaisirs Fermiers is a producers’ shop with a butcher and charcuterie counter, catering, seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheese, dairy products, spices, beer and wine. Before planning a purchase, check current sales and opening conditions.
