Arçais brings together historic harbor areas, village culture shaped by the maraîchin tradition, and activities in the Marais sauvage. If you’re looking for a hotel in Arçais, you can plan your trip around what interests you most: traces of the area’s former goods trade, walks along the waterways, or cycling and boating experiences.

Harbor History and Village Culture

The fully restored Grand Port d’Arçais was one of the most important trading points between the plain and the Sèvre Niortaise valley. Two wooden cranes at the Grand Port recall how poplar trunks were once brought from the waterway to the shore: the trunks were lifted from the water there using the cranes. The ground floor of the Grand Logis housed eleven warehouses. They were used to store goods in transit to Niort and Marans.

You’ll find further traces of history in buildings around the village. By the river harbor stands a 19th-century residence, privately owned and visible from the road. The former post, telegraph and telephone building still bears its historic inscription, “Poste – télégraphe – téléphone”. Arçais is a typical village of the settlement and residential culture shaped by the maraîchin tradition.

Waterways and Paths Through the Marais

The towpath along the waterways of Arçais is suitable for walks. Arçais also has more than 40 km of navigable canals. So water is part of the experience, from a path by the shore to a landscape also associated with boating. From its base in Arçais, La Bicyclette Verte offers a combined day of cycling and boating in the Marais Sauvage.
