Fénery is characterized by a hilly bocage landscape, where grasslands alternate with cultivated fields. The hiking trails in Fénery pass along sunken lanes, through meadows and forests, and by small ponds in the Gâtine bocage. This offers different ways to plan your trip: spending time outdoors, following a former railway line, or taking a trail about the history of the village. Which of these appeals most to you depends on whether you want to focus on hiking, cycling or exploring the local heritage during your stay.

Hiking with different distance details

Two marked trails along the Pont-de-Bois stream offer a total of 20 km of hiking. This distance is the combined length of both trails. One specific loop trail is “Fénery – Les sources du Cébron”: it starts at the Voie Verte car park, is 7.5 km long and takes about two hours. This gives you different ways to plan: a combined total distance for two marked trails and an approximate walking time for a named loop trail. The former Fénery railway station is also a starting point for walks on the Voie Verte. These provide several specific reference points for choosing a hiking route, though the details do not all describe the same thing.

The Voie Verte and its railway history

The former railway line in Fénery has been converted into a Voie Verte, suitable for walking or cycling. Its former use included the connection between Bressuire and Parthenay: until 1982, express trains on the Nantes–Limoges route via Poitiers ran along the line. The year relates to the railway’s history; the Voie Verte is the former line converted for walking and cycling. Another named option is “Roule ma boule”, which runs from Pougne-Hérisson to Fénery by bike or on foot. Unlike “Fénery – Les sources du Cébron”, which is explicitly described as a loop trail, this route names two places as its start and destination. When choosing, you can therefore also consider whether you are interested in a loop or a route between named places.

Heritage trail in the village centre

The three-kilometre heritage trail starts in the village centre and connects several historic sights. Its five information panels have texts in English and Parlanjhe. The panels also provide information about animal species, based on a local fauna inventory from 2022. Alongside its historical focus, the trail also offers a perspective on local wildlife. It provides a distinct focus on the village and its history, alongside the hiking trails through the bocage countryside and the former railway line.

Fitting activities into your travel plans

These measurements answer different questions and should not be treated as equivalent stages. When choosing your destination, you can also consider whether hiking, cycling or the village trail will be the main focus of your stay. Fénery thus offers several clearly defined ways to plan your trip, from the landscape and railway history to the interpretation of local heritage.
