Saint-Même-les-Carrières can be explored through two defining themes: historic limestone quarrying and the traces of the town’s heritage. A self-guided digital tour and a guided visit offer different perspectives. If you’re planning a hotel stay here, you can shape your visit around the history of quarrying and also include the weekly market and the local wine producer.

Limestone Quarries and Bats

The Carrières de Saint-Même comprise an extensive network of underground limestone quarries, with 40 kilometres of galleries on several levels. Quarrying ended in the 1960s; some galleries are flooded. Their size, levels and flooded areas together convey the scale of this former quarrying site.

The quarries are also important as a hibernation site for bats: they are considered an important site of this kind in Poitou-Charentes and France. Winter counts have recorded eleven species. This adds a clearly seasonal natural-history aspect to the industrial history. Visitors interested in wildlife will find a specific connection to the winter season here, without the focus on bats replacing the town’s historic character.

Church, Inscription and Historic Sites

The Church of Saint-Maxime, also known as Saint-Mème, dates from the 12th century and was largely destroyed in 1569. During a restoration in the first half of the 18th century, the inscription “F.P.M.C. BOUNEAU 1731” was added to or preserved on a keystone. The church thus brings together a long history and a specific detail recorded on the vault’s keystone.

The washhouse and the well also have a datable chapter in their history: both were rebuilt in 1873. The dates associated with the church and these buildings offer different historical reference points in the same town. A guided heritage tour visits the communal bread oven and the remains of the château, passing by the church and washhouse. The quarries are presented and explained from the esplanade.

Tour, Market and Winegrowing

The digital tour “Les pierres de Saint-Même-Les-Carrières” is accompanied by a narrated guide and can be enjoyed at your own pace. By contrast, the guided heritage tour follows a route to several historic sites and includes an explanation of the quarries from the esplanade. If you’d like to plan a guided visit, ask in advance about the dates.

The weekly market takes place every Thursday morning and features between six and nine local producers. It gives your visit a regular weekly focal point and an opportunity to get to know the town through its producers. Maison Camps is a family-run wine estate in Saint-Même-les-Carrières that produces and sells Grande Champagne Cognacs and Pineaux des Charentes.

A visit to Maison Camps can include a tour from the vineyards to the ageing cellar and then the distillery, where the Charentais double-distillation method is explained. It may also include a free tasting of Pineaux and Cognacs, with an introduction to their aromas. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether the tour is available. This lets you experience the historic sites, market and wine estate as distinct parts of your stay.
