Blanzac-Lès-Matha: Church, village history and interactive sculpture
Accommodation in Blanzac-Lès-Matha
Blanzac-Lès-Matha brings together Romanesque architecture, local history and an interactive sculpture. These themes are especially tangible at the Church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul, the war memorial, the communal washhouse and the Totem du Pressage.
Romanesque church and distinctive interior layout
The Church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul is Romanesque in style. Its simple portal has three round-arched archivolts decorated with geometric figures. Archivolts are moulded bands that follow the curve of a portal arch. The three arch layers clearly mark the entrance; the geometric figures add an ornamental accent to the simple portal. The square bell tower has a flat roof, with twin windows on each side. These exterior features can be considered alongside the layout of the church interior.
Inside, there are two naves. One of them was added in the 16th century as a long seigneurial chapel. A nave is a longitudinal section of a church interior; its addition as a chapel gives one of the two sections a specifically named function. The church thus combines Romanesque exterior forms with a precisely dated change to its interior.
Memorial and communal washhouse
The war memorial was moved from the cemetery to the village centre in 1989. It is made of dressed stone and decorated with rosettes, volutes, flowers and draped wreaths, with a cross crowning the monument. Its relocation and design offer two different points of interest: the move describes a change of location, while the material and motifs draw attention to its stonework. Floral ornaments and curling volutes sit alongside the cross as the crowning element.
In the early 20th century, the communal washhouse was altered by the construction of walls that support two lean-to roofs. A lean-to roof slopes in one direction. The washhouse is set in idyllic surroundings and has a picnic table where visitors can take a break. This combines a distinctive architectural feature with a practical place to rest.
Picnic area and interactive sculpture
Blanzac-Lès-Matha’s picnic area is on the Route de Matha. It has tables and litter bins; toilets are nearby, and there is access for motorhomes. If you plan to stop here, check the current condition of the facilities before your visit, as they may change.
The Totem du Pressage is an interactive sculpture inspired by grape pressing. It invites visitors to touch, turn, feel and play with the material. Unlike viewing a portal, tower or memorial, engaging with this sculpture also involves touch and movement. The material thus becomes part of the experience, while grape pressing provides the thematic connection. The totem adds a distinctive feature alongside the village’s architectural and historical themes.
