Saint-Fraigne: Nature, Water and History
Accommodation in Saint-Fraigne
In Saint-Fraigne, themes of nature, water and local history come together. The Jardins Éphémères lie in the heart of the Marais de Saint-Fraigne; the town is also home to an educational centre with exhibitions, a museum of school history and a historically designed church interior. This gives visitors several different themes to explore when planning a trip, each connected with Saint-Fraigne in its own way.
Nature and Water in Saint-Fraigne
The Jardins Éphémères have been created anew each year in the Marais de Saint-Fraigne for more than 20 years. Their location in the heart of the wetland connects the gardens directly with the landscape. The restored Marais are exceptional nature reserves for wetland fauna and flora. The garden and nature reserve thus share a common nature theme, but represent different aspects: on the one hand, the gardens renewed each year, and on the other, the protected diversity of the wetland.
The educational workshops run by the Isle Nature team also explore nature-related themes. They cover nature, environmental responsibility and the garden’s biological diversity. This adds an educational perspective to the landscape: the focus is not only on the wetland, but also on environmental responsibility and the diversity found in the garden.
The Maison de l'eau is a public and educational resource and learning centre dedicated to protecting biological diversity and water resources. Events are held there throughout the year. The centre also includes an exhibition space of more than 80 m², with changing exhibitions on water-related themes, also running throughout the year. Water and biological diversity are therefore central both as educational concerns and as exhibition themes.
Church and School History
The interior of the Église Saint-Fraigne was created by Louis Mazetier between 1944 and 1951 and completed by his student Laurent Escap. The church is temporarily closed for construction work. As this status may change, check before visiting.
The Musée de l'école features a reconstructed classroom depicting a school class from the early 20th century. Old books and school items add to the scene; the collection spans the period from the Third French Republic to the post-war era. The museum thus brings together a classroom scene and objects from several decades of French school history. Opening arrangements may change, so check the latest information before planning your visit.
