In Rivières, the GR 36 long-distance trail, Église Saint-Cybard and Manoir de Ribérolles appeal to different interests: hiking, church architecture and building history. The Passerelle du Gros Roc and the Défi forestier en Braconne also offer practical starting points for planning. This lets you weigh up whether you would rather spend your time on a hike, a nature-focused activity or historic buildings.

Long-distance trail and pedestrian crossing

The GR 36 passes through Rivières along the right bank of the Tardoire. As a hiking trail, it connects the English Channel with the eastern Pyrenees. This brings together two scales for your bearings: the long-distance route between its endpoints and a specific stretch along the riverbank in Rivières. Local trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

The Passerelle du Gros Roc provides a pedestrian crossing when the Bandiat leaves its riverbed. Its function is therefore tied to a specific situation on the river. Alongside the GR 36, it offers another distinct aspect to consider when planning: a pedestrian crossing under the stated condition, and a long-distance trail with a stretch along the right bank of the Tardoire.

Karst landscape and Défi forestier

The Forêt de la Braconne is an almost 5,000-hectare state forest on karst terrain, crisscrossed by underground rivers. Underground water has created spectacular sinkholes there, including the Grande Fosse, Fosse Limousine and Fosse Mobile. The area, geological bedrock and named landforms describe different aspects of this natural attraction: the forest is shaped not only by its size, but also by the relationship between karst and underground water.

The Défi forestier en Braconne starts at the Gros Fayant forest house in Rivières and covers a 4-kilometre route with 12 challenges. This free smartphone experience is offered year-round. App availability and operational details may change; check them before setting out. This gives you an overview of the route and digital format before you add the experience to your plans.

Church and building history

Église Saint-Cybard de Rivières has an original Romanesque chapel, a Gothic façade and a Byzantine dome. These three distinct architectural features give the church a layered character rather than defining it by just one style. Église Saint-Cybard and its cemetery were listed as historic monuments by decree on 29 November 1948.

The construction dates of Manoir de Ribérolles differ by section: the central section and right wing were built in 1786, and the left wing in 1818. The manor house is neoclassical. The dates make the different building phases clear without assigning the sections to the same period of construction. By decree of 12 March 2010, the manor was listed in its entirety as a historic monument.

Practical visit planning

Église Saint-Cybard is open every day year-round. If it is closed, you can request the key from the town hall office. Opening hours and key arrangements may change; check the details before your visit. This makes it easier to weigh a church visit against your other interests: the manor’s building history offers a different focus from the church’s architectural features, while the GR 36 and Défi forestier offer their own activity options.
