Discover Genté: church, fountain and vineyard panorama
Accommodation in Genté
Discover Genté through its distinctive local features: Saint-Médard Church, the fountain with its stone basins, a viewpoint overlooking the vineyards of the Cognac region, and two routes of different lengths. These features give you several ways to plan your trip. When looking for a hotel in Genté, you can first decide whether your stay will focus more on architectural history, scenery or a walk.
Saint-Médard Church
Saint-Médard Church was founded in 1072 by a man named Guillaume Paluel. It was rebuilt in the 12th century and altered several times over the years. Its history therefore encompasses both its founding and later phases of construction.
The tower’s richly decorated window openings, framed by groups of columns, are particularly striking. Faces carved in relief adorn the corners of the cornice. The architecture thus brings together several distinctive details: the framed openings in the tower and the sculpted faces projecting from the cornice.
Local history beyond the church
Genté’s medieval history also offers a distinct glimpse into the town. In the Middle Ages, the commune belonged to the castellanies of Cognac and Merpins. The de Mortemer family held the seigneurial rights in Genté until 1561, after which Gaston de la Rochefoucault succeeded them. This succession of lords adds another perspective on the town’s past to the building history of Saint-Médard.
The fountain and the Venelle
La Fontaine in Genté is a Vauclusian-type spring with an inexhaustible flow. An aqueduct feeds its stone basins. The spring, watercourse and basins together form a distinctive feature of the landscape: the water is described not only as a spring, but also as being carried to the basins by the aqueduct.
The Venelle de la Fontaine is another historic link to the fountain. Residents once used this narrow passage to fetch water from the fountain. The spring can therefore be considered both a feature of the landscape and, through this former route to the water, part of the town’s history.
Viewpoint and Parc de la Mairie
The orientation table stands at an elevation of 101 m on the site of a former mill. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view over the vineyards of the Cognac region. Visibility depends on the weather, which can affect how far the panorama can be seen.
Parc de la Mairie has picnic tables, a children’s playground and a multisport court. These facilities suit different plans: taking a break outdoors, playing or getting active. If one of them is important to your visit, check its current status in advance, as the facilities may change over time.
Two routes of different lengths
The “Pas à pas au Cœur de Genté” walk is 1.6 km long. The Circuit du Chemin 101 circular route is 9.72 km long. These distances offer a clear comparison: the walk is the shorter route, while the Circuit is the longer loop.
Signposting and route conditions on the Circuit du Chemin 101 may change. Check the latest information before setting out. This makes the route length a useful planning guide while allowing you to take local conditions into account.
