Tilloloy combines architectural history with a specific events theme. Château de Tilloloy, the French formal garden, the Eglise de Tilloloy and the Portail de l'hôtel d'Hinnisdal represent different aspects of cultural heritage. The RETRO C TROP festival adds a music event at the Château. When planning your trip, it may therefore be important to decide whether your interest lies more in the historic buildings or in a particular event date.

Château and Formal Garden

The Domaine de Tilloloy has been partially listed as a Monument historique under an order dated 4 March 1994. The French formal garden of Château de Tilloloy has also been listed as a Monument historique since 1994. The two listings relate to different subjects: parts of the Domaine and the garden. This distinguishes the historic classification of the estate from that of its formal garden. The park is also available for outdoor activities such as receptions, exhibitions and concerts. Dates for receptions, exhibitions and concerts may change; check the latest information when planning a visit.

Renaissance Church in the Courtyard of Honour

The Eglise de Tilloloy is a Renaissance church; its stained-glass windows are its finest adornment. Its elegant brick-and-stone façade blends into the courtyard of honour at Château de Tilloloy. The church’s distinctive features therefore include its architectural style and windows, as well as the materials used for its façade. Its connection to the courtyard of honour also links the church building to the architectural setting of the Château.

The Portail de l'hĂ´tel d'Hinnisdal

The Portail de l'hôtel d'Hinnisdal bears a cartouche with the inscription “HOTEL / D'HINNISDAL”. It comes from the Hôtel d'Hinnisdal on Rue Cassette in Paris’s Saint-Sulpice district and was probably moved to the park of Château de Tilloloy and rebuilt there around 1906. The portal thus brings together a Parisian origin and a later architectural history in Tilloloy. The inscription preserves the name of the Hôtel, while the relocation and reconstruction mark the later history of this architectural feature. The date is deliberately approximate: “probably around 1906”. For visitors interested in culture, the portal offers a tangible way to consider its origins, inscription and architectural transformation together.

Tilloloy in Literature and Military History

Blaise Cendrars recounts Tilloloy’s history during the First World War in his book “La Main coupée”. In it, he describes his Foreign Legion unit passing through the village. This literary perspective focuses on a specific episode in the village’s history and complements the subjects of architecture and historic preservation with a connection to military history. For literature-minded travellers, Tilloloy is thus linked to a named book and the experience of the Foreign Legion described in it.

Festival and Events

RETRO C TROP has been held at Château de Tilloloy since 2016 and features music by artists from the 1950s to the 2000s. During the festival, the stage is set in front of the Château; the lawns of the courtyard of honour serve as an area for festivalgoers to spend time. The layout may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan a trip around the festival, check the dates and information for the relevant edition. Together with the receptions, exhibitions and concerts offered in the park, the festival shows that Tilloloy offers an events theme alongside its architectural history.
